Marketing and fishing have much in common
I routinely use fishing analogies and anecdotes to communicate marketing concepts in my training marketing. Why? Because marketing and fishing are very similar in method and intent.
If we assume that their clients are the "fish" in your refrigerator, an aquarium, or return to the sea on the basis of what you do with the fish after capture, then the objective is to capture larger more. And as the fishing, your marketing efforts to systematically identify and capture the big fish.
You may or may not be aware that Louisiana in the Gulf of Mexico are thousands of oil production and drilling rigs. Each one of these huge artificial reefs with all kind of symbiosis with the structure fish for food and protection.
In general, the more you have, different types and sizes of fish that are around the platform.
The best way to find fish in the Gulf is going to one of these structures and moorings for boats up the structure. Then you can begin fishing at different depths with different baits, trying to see what the fish are biting.
Sometimes you can go for hours without taking a single bite, but you know that fish are there.
How? Then call sonar technology in our sport fishing boats that allows us to look down the water column and find the section "Contacts" – the fish. Therefore, it becomes a matter of eating what they want. But in reality, it is more a question of whether or not they are hungry, in first.
You see, fish eat when hungry. "How many times you have to wait, in fact most of the time is appropriate. There are several factors that influence when fish are hungry and start eating, but the scope of this science is beyond this discussion.
Several times After trying without catching fish, we are changing platforms, use another 5-10 miles to the next platform, in some most cases. Sometimes, when you get the fish are biting there.
However, unless you are fishing with another vessel, do not really know if they are now biting in the platform where you're fishing. In most cases, this is the case because the fish feed more or less the same time together, but not at the same time each day. They eat when they are "prepared."
So if you reach a platform for oil production, and watch the fish on the sonar, you know they are there. You do not know what kind they are unless you're brave enough to the dawn of diving equipment and go see them (very dangerous sport that some people do).
If you fish and fish bait and switch until Do you miss time, or if they are satisfied with their catch. But the most important concept here is that in these structures, which "know" there are fish there, and depending on water depth and season, to "know" what kind Fish are there, like many species are migratory.
Another way of catching fish, usually very large, it is lagging behind in a area where they think they are finished. You spend hours and hours down 2 to 8 baits (artificial baits for the most part) to the intersection of random … lie was hungry and you are where "big fish" is, at this time.
Trolling is a long way especially problematic for fish, but it is the preference of many high-end fishermen (and women) who have been in sport a long time and have taken all other types of fish they want.
Do you see these fishermen (marketing) are "target" of a specific type or a very small range of large fish such as marlin, swordfish, mahi-mahi, tuna, mackerel, etc. These guys are just willing to wait to make "enormous."
And yes by the way they capture some of the smaller species to maintain its cost of freezers, and provide a bit of action among the greats.
What does this have to do with marketing, you may think? It's just an easy way to frame the nature marketing activity, the results of it, and how to focus your marketing efforts. If you are looking for a lot of small fish, usually is not necessary go too far or too complicated. The pups are many, close to the coast.
If you want a lot of focus, you contacted the oil platforms, in accordance with the objectives of its size and quality. Next to a fishing platform 200 feet of water can get the snapper and fishing within 500 feet, you get the tuna. And when you want capture the greatest, which carries everything. Sometimes, some of these structures, sometimes in the open ocean.
You train for the needle near the coast (the least not in Louisiana), because is not it. You do not fish for trout in 500 feet of water, because they are not there.
Thus, referring the business of marketing, including Google Adwords or search engine marketing, you can hear me use these analogies to help to frame the idea. For as in the marketing There are many angles, these angles exist in the fishery.
But the most important angle is the general trend. When you are a beginner, you tend to want to take over the smaller fish. As we have more experience and the results are more smaller fish, which tend to want to accelerate at least play catch larger fish.
And finally as a salesperson with great performance record (or capture the whole experience type of fish), will be more willing to spend the day or weekend trolling around for the 1st strike, "the big fish as large convenient the target audience. It is a natural progression.
There are several angles and analogies, but for now consider the last term we will focus start your business and profits with the most abundant fish in the smallest, then ultimately, you take the path of high customer oriented high-end, which generate returns for your effort and time.
