Science must confront a power greater than our own in this unusual sci-fi-thriller. As seismic activities around the world begin going haywire, causing untold damages in major cities and claiming thousands of lives, the President of the United States orders Kasia Czaban, one of his top scientific advisers, and Mason Rand, a leading weapons expert, to investigate the phenomenon and see if it can be stopped. Kasia and Mason’s investigation leads them to the Himalayas, where they discover a strange object of otherworldly origin that can generate its own power and water, spawn and support its own life forms, and either extend or extinguish human lives at will. What is this strange item? What is its role in the history of our universe? And can Mason and Kasia unlock its secrets without falling prey to its dangers? Epoch stars David Keith, Stephanie Niznik, Ryan O’Neal, and Shannon Lee. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Zoom [7inch Vinyl Disc] [Single]

Zoom [7inch Vinyl Disc] [Single]

$5.99

Following the breakup of Guided by Voices at the end of 2004, Robert Pollard’s first release was a comedy album culled from his beer-powered stage banter (talk about your auspicious debuts!), but the brief EP Zoom marked his first public musical statement in the post-GBV epoch. Given Pollard’s long-standing habit of tossing off pop songs with almost alarming speed, Zoom is a predictably casual four-song affair, with cryptic found recordings taking up the spaces between songs. There’s a nice, slightly jazzy guitar instrumental (“Dr. Fuji and Henry Charleston [Zoom Variation]“), a not-quite-finished-sounding acoustic number (“Have a Day Mr. Clay”), and two good if not great pop tunes in the traditional Pollard manner (“Catherine From Mid-October” and “Zoom [It Happens All Over the World]“). In short, this represents the newly solo Pollard sounding pretty much the same way he always has — which, given the ups and downs of his back catalog (especially the Fading Captain material), could be a bad thing as easily as a good thing. For fans only. ~ Mark Deming

Ladies Of Canyon (Japan) (Mlps) (Shm)

Ladies Of Canyon (Japan) (Mlps) (Shm)

$49.99

Joni Mitchell’s third release found her moving away from the wistful folk of her debut and CLOUDS, branching out into the progressive pop and jazz elements that would define her best work. The bright, poppy “Big Yellow Taxi,” the album’s single, is here, as is her epoch-defining “Woodstock,” a soulful, stirring song about the 1969 rock festival that was later covered by Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young. But the material on LADIES OF THE CANYON is uniformly strong, demonstrating the mature style and vision that made her one of the leading voices of the ’70s.On songs like, “Conversation” and the title cut, Mitchell’s lyrics begin to turn toward to the quirky, personal poetry of interior landscapes, focusing with a writer’s eye on scene, detail, and the dynamics of human relationships. Her instrumental palette is broadened too, with colorful, textured arrangements that make greater use of piano, as well as strings, reeds, electric keyboards, and percussion. Some songs, like the sweet, chiming “The Circle Game,” seem a bit na?ve, but these are counterbalanced with darker songs like “The Arrangement,” a stark ballad. In all, LADIES OF THE CANYON was Mitchell’s first classic album, one that helped pave the way for its watershed successor, BLUE.

So the question about World Peace, as it has been with every album since Two Sevens Clash, is: how does it measure up? And the answer is: better than any album the band has recorded in a decade. It’s hard to know just what has invigorated the aging Joseph Hill, but he is singing with more force and conviction than we’ve heard in years; and the band that was organized to back him up (consisting of The Firehouse Crew and members of Shaggy’s backup group) sounds like the rumble of thunder and the crack of a whip. As always, Hill’s melodies are as simple and obvious as nursery rhyme ditties, and as usual, they are insanely catchy and almost endlessly entrancing. On World Peace, Hill chose to reprise a couple of songs from the old book, “Dog a Go Nyam Dog” and “Never Get Weary,” but both come off sounding like new compositions. Highlights from the newer material include the strangely funky and horn-heavy “Holy Mount Zion,” the Nyahbinghi-influenced “Babylon Falling,” and the exquisitely sanctified “Walk in Jah Light.” But his real moment of triumph comes on “Selection Train,” on which he proves that he is still capable of singing the line “reggae train is coming” without losing his audience. How many other reggae singers can do that? ~ Rick Anderson

Blind Husbands/The Great Gabbo - B&W Special

Blind Husbands/The Great Gabbo – B&W Special

$24.99

Includes:Blind Husbands (1919) The Great Gabbo (1929) Blind Husbands Because of his portrayals of villainous Prussians in pictures such as Hearts of the World and The Heart of Humanity, Erich von Stroheim was already famous as “the man you love to hate.” But Stroheim had also been quite busy behind the camera over the years, as an assistant director to D.W. Griffith and art director to Douglas Fairbanks. When he approached Carl Laemmle at Universal Studios with a screenplay entitled The Pinnacle, the mogul wasted no time in agreeing to let Stroheim both star and direct. The result was the auteur’s first film, renamed Blind Husbands. In it, Stroheim shows deeper facets to his officer (this time an Austrian) who, underneath the elaborate trappings, is no gentleman. American couple Dr. and Mrs. Armstrong (Sam deGrasse and Francelia Billington) arrive at a retreat in the Alps at the same time as Lieutenant Erich von Steuben (Stroheim). The Lieutenant is a reckless and dissolute soul who sets his cap for Mrs. Armstrong. Since her husband is kindly but neglectful, she is easy prey. Their flirtation is watched over carefully by the guide Sepp (Gibson Gowland), who is indebted to the good doctor, and he manages to keep the wife away from the Lieutenant on the night the four of them spend together in a lodge. The next day when von Steuben and Dr. Armstrong climb the summit, a letter from Mrs. Armstrong falls out of von Steuben’s pocket and a fierce battle between the two men takes place on the peak. The doctor cuts the rope binding the two men together, and for his sins, the Lieutenant falls to a terrible death. This picture introduces themes that carried throughout Stroheim’s career — the eternal triangle shows up in most of his films in one form or another, and the climatic struggle between the two men would be repeated in the director’s flawed masterpiece, Greed (which starred Gowland as McTeague). The easy decadence and the careful attention to detail would also be constants. Even though this isn’t anywhere close to his best work, Blind Husbands was one of the most impressive directorial debuts of all time — “This picture is exceptional. It marks an epoch,” spouted an enthusiastic Variety critic. Stroheim was poised at the dawning edge of the ’20s, at ready to give the decade some of its most deliriously debauched dramatic moments. ~ Janiss Garza, Rovi The Great Gabbo After the disastrous failure of Queen Kelly, the great silent film director Eric Von Stroheim began to parcel himself out as an actor-for-hire, his directing career in tatters. His first post-Queen Kelly acting job was in this early sound film curio, with Von Stroheim playing The Great Gabbo, a ventriloquist who is gradually going insane, transferring his subliminal urges to his dummy, Otto. Gabbo’s lovely assistant Mary (Betty Compson) is in love with him, but Gabbo’s reciprocal love for Mary is transformed by Otto into heaps of hateful verbal abuse — so much so that Mary leaves the
