Act of Will - $12.99 Made for British television, Act of Will focuses on three generations of women in a proud, indomitable family. Australian-born director Don Sharp brings to his soap-opera material the same energy and vitality that he’d previously lavished on such theatrical features as Kiss of the Vampire (1963) and Hennessy (1985). Since a portion of the production money was ponied up by Hollywood, American actor Peter Coyote is given a crucial role in the World War II sequences. Among the distaff cast members are the always welcome Jean Marsh (Upstairs, Downstairs), Victoria Tennant (the former Mrs. Steve Martin) and Elizabeth Hurley (who, as of this writing at least, is the girlfriend of Hugh Grant). Act of Will received its widest American exposure on public and cable television. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi |

Sister Act - $8.99 A sleeper hit that received a lukewarm reception from critics but was a success with audiences, Sister Act (1992) was star Whoopi Golberg’s first bona fide smash after her Oscar victory for Ghost (1990). Goldberg stars as Deloris Van Cartier, a Reno lounge singer who accidentally witnesses a brutal murder carried out by her gangster boyfriend Vince (Harvey Keitel). Under the protection of a detective (Bill Nunn) who’s trying to bring down Vince’s criminal operation, Deloris is placed in protective custody at a San Francisco convent. Masquerading as a nun renamed Sister Mary Clarence, Deloris shakes up the established order of the sisters’ lives, particularly enlivening their choral efforts. Although running constantly afoul of the Mother Superior (Maggie Smith), the new, jazzed-up musical act becomes a huge hit in the community, even drawing the attention of the Pope, but also alerting Vince to Deloris’ whereabouts. Although credited to the pseudonymous Joseph Howard, Sister Act was actually written by Paul Rudnick and Carrie Fisher. The film was followed by a sequel, Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit (1993). ~ Karl Williams, Rovi |

A Small Act - $24.99 Two people separated by continents and cultures are linked by an act of generosity that changed a life for the better in this documentary. Chris Mburu was born to a Kenyan family mired in poverty, and in a nation where families must pay for their children to attend school, his academic history would have ended early if it weren’t for Hilde Back. Back was a schoolteacher from Sweden who, through a charitable organization, donated $15 a month to support Mburu’s schooling. Back and Mburu knew little about one another, but her small monthly stipend allowed him to finish school with excellent marks, and he went on to receive a degree from Harvard and became a lawyer. Today, Mburu works for the United Nations as part of a legal team that battles discrimination and genocide through the courts, but he hasn’t forgotten the village where he was born or the donations that made his success possible. Mburu has established a scholarship foundation to help young people in the Third World continue their education, and the foundation has been named for Hilde Back as a reminder of the positive consequences of small acts of compassion. Filmmaker Jennifer Arnold tells Chris Mburu’s remarkable true-life story and records the first meeting between him and his benefactor Hilde Back in the documentary A Small Act, which received its world premiere at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi |

Riot Act $7.99 Pearl Jam: Eddie Vedder (vocals, guitar); Matt Cameron (guitar, drums, percussion); Mike McCready, Stone Gossard (guitar); Jeff Ament (bass).Additional personnel: Boom Gaspar (Fender Rhodes piano, Hammond B-3 organ); Adam Kasper (piano).Recorded at Studio X, Seattle, Washington.Emerging from a three-year hibernation, Pearl Jam returns with RIOT ACT, a hard-hitting collection of 15 cuts that finds the band leaving behind the experimental nuances of BINAURAL and YIELD. Instead, Eddie Vedder puts on his hair shirt as he takes on both inner and outer conflict amid ambiguity. Hitched to the twin-guitar might of Stone Gossard and Mike McCready, Vedder treats Dubya scornfully on the howling “Bush Leaguer” and manages to turn the camera inward on the waltz-flavored chaos of “I Am Mine.”The subtle presence of a humming keyboard on the driving “Get Right” is the sole concession to incorporating any contemporary nuance, and even then, howling guitars ensure this song remains firmly in the rock & roll camp. Other highlights include the thunderous “Save You” along with equally aggressive fret-driven tour de forces like “Ghost” and the slightly more ethereal “You Are.” As one of the few survivors of the early-’90s grunge movement, (along with the often overlooked Mudhoney), Pearl Jam has managed to weather the choppy seas of pop culture and emerged with musical chemistry as rock-solid as its convictions. |

Preservation: Act 1 $11.99 Despite the title’s similarity to that of the Kinks’ 1968 album THE VILLAGE GREEN PRESERVATION SOCIETY (which frequently turns up on “Greatest Albums of All Time” surveys), the group’s 1973 rock opera PRESERVATION ACT 1 is not nearly as song-oriented as its predecessor. As Record Collector editor Peter Doggett writes in his excellent liner notes to VelVel’s reissue of PRESERVATION ACT 1, VILLAGE GREEN was more of a concept album, creating a feel without using a narrative. Each of its songs was a miniature window into English villages’ fast-disappearing way of life. With PRESERVATION ACT 1, Ray Davies took the basic idea behind VILLAGE GREEN and turned it into a larger-than-life production with a highly didactic narrative. It was clear that, this time around, Davies was not going to leave listeners any room to interpret his musical statements symbolically. The result was a Kinks album like no other, a forum for Davies’s wildly creative imagination and his talent for storytelling. It left many Kinks fans hungry for its sequel, PRESERVATION ACT 2, which came out six months later. |

Sister Act/Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit [2 Discs] - $9.99 Includes:Sister Act (1992), MPAA Rating: PG Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit (1993), MPAA Rating: PG Sister Act A sleeper hit that received a lukewarm reception from critics but was a success with audiences, Sister Act (1992) was star Whoopi Golberg’s first bona fide smash after her Oscar victory for Ghost (1990). The film was followed by a sequel, Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit (1993). ~ Karl Williams, Rovi Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit In the sequel to the hit comedy Sister Act, Whoopie Goldberg reprises her role of Deloris Van Cartier, a Las Vegas entertainer who hid out with in a convent of nuns to avoid a nasty bunch of gangsters. In Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit, Deloris is persuaded to return to the convent by the Mother Superior (Maggie Smith), because her help is needed in teaching their choral students at St. Francis High in San Francisco. However, St. Francis is in a crisis, since the administrator running the school (James Coburn) is threatening to shut the place down. If the gospel choir wins first place in a singing contest in Los Angeles, St. Francis will be saved from the priest’s plans. Though the plot is rather thin and derivative, Sister Act 2 is lighthearted fun, thanks to good musical numbers and winning performances from the cast. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, Rovi |

Nu Med [LP] $13.98 International sound fusionists Balkan Beat Box work more of their energetic, hybrid magic on their sophomore release, NU MED. There are plenty of Eastern European influences here, sure, but it’s the elements of hip-hop, funk, electronica, R&B, reggae, and traditional brass-band sounds that makes the album a nonstop joy-ride of rhythmic and melodic surprises. By creating party music that blends every style under the sun, Balkan Beat Box makes the powerful, evergreen political statement that universal brotherhood is only as far away as one’s ability to keep an open mind while grooving. |

Med lla [LP] $29.98 With 2004′s MEDULLA, Bjork’s already distinctive musical vision is catapulted into another stratosphere. Using the mouth as the primary instrument–vocal, percussive, and otherwise–MEDULLA evokes the ethereal sound of an angelic spirit and a group of Benedictine monks desperately hurtling through outer space. “Pleasure Is All Mine” immediately establishes MEDULLA’s haunting, yet strangely comforting, tone. On top of a distorted background of carnal breathing, the vocals of Bjork, Inuit throat singer Tagaq, Mike Patton (Fantomas/Mr. Bungle), and the Icelandic Choir combine with the rhythms of human beat-box Rahzel, building to an eerily ferocious intensity. The album, which also features art-rock pioneer Robert Wyatt, shifts back and forth between ambitious, operatically layered tracks (“Where Is the Line,” “Desired Constellation”) and more direct a cappella songs (“Show Me Forgiveness,” “Oll Birtan”). Bjork reaches her peak when she combines both of these seemingly disparate forces, as in the electrifying “Who Is It (Carry My Joy on the Left, Carry My Pain on the Right)” and the album-closer, “Triumph of a Heart.” MEDULLA proves that, once again, when it comes to sheer musical audacity, Bjork knows no boundaries. |

Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit – Widescreen $8.99 In the sequel to the hit comedy Sister Act, Whoopie Goldberg reprises her role of Deloris Van Cartier, a Las Vegas entertainer who hid out with in a convent of nuns to avoid a nasty bunch of gangsters.

Class Act – Widescreen $14.99 Kid N’ Play (Christopher Reid and Christopher Martin) star in this role-reversal comedy that plays like a badly done sitcom without the laughs. The switcheroo occurs when two inner-city high school students — one a straight-A whiz-kid and the other an angry criminal type — have to switch identities and are forced to live each other’s lives. Christopher Reid is Duncan Pinderhughes, a student with perfect grades but who can’t graduate high school unless he passes gym. Christopher Martin plays Blade Brown, whose probation officer gives him an ultimatum — graduate high school or go to jail. Due to a mix-up in their high school records, Pinderhughes and Brown are forced to take over each other’s lives. Brown ends up in a class for gifted students, and Pinderhughes finds himself skulking behind the school building to a shotgun shack that houses all the high school’s troublemakers. ~ Paul Brenner, Rovi |

Act of God – Widescreen $24.99 Documentarian Jennifer Baichwal helmed this reflective documentary that ponders the spiritual, emotional, and metaphysical ramifications of being struck by a lightning bolt. According to the National Weather Service, the odds of this incident befalling any given person are about one in 700,000, which makes many a survivor question why he or she fell prey to this unusual calamity; some infer a cosmic reason, some reject that possibility, but most fall somewhere in between as they feebly attempt to come to terms with it. In the film, Baichwal speaks with a number of well-known victims, including the novelist and screenwriter Paul Auster (The Music of Chance), the improv-driven prog rock guitarist Fred Frith, and others, and evaluates how the interviewees’ lives forked off in new directions after a massive discharge of electricity descended from the sky and landed on them. ~ Nathan Southern, Rovi |
