Forgotten Western Classics: Lure of the Wasteland/Call of the Rockies – B&W $5.99 Includes:West of the Rockies (1931) Lure of the Wasteland (1939) West of the Rockies It is difficult to explain why the fly-by-night distribution firm of Road Show Pictures dragged the silent sagebrusher West of the Rockies off the shelf in 1931, three years into the talkie era. Outfitted with an unconvincing beard, Ben Lyon is cast as frontier scout Kit Carson, leading a wagon train through Indian country. Heroine Marie Prevost is in love with Carson, but he prefers to spend his time with Gladys Johnston. An Indian attack and buffalo stampede, obviously lifted from another picture, have been arbitrarily inserted in the narrative. The only other recognizable actors in the picture were Russell Simpson and Anders Randolph. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi Lure of the Wasteland A “special” by Monogram standards, Lure of the Wasteland was lensed in a not inexpensive process called Telco-color. Grant Withers takes a break from his duties in the “Mister Wong” series to play Smitty, a US marshal assigned to track down $250,000 in stolen bonds. To gain the confidence of the outlaws, Smitty pulls the old ploy of posing as a crook and joining the gang. Despite his mental agility in plotting and planning large-scale robberies, outlaw leader Butch (LeRoy Mason) is unable to see through Smitty’s guise until it’s too late for him. Former silent comedy star Snub Pollard, fresh from a comic-sidekick stint in Grand National’s Tex Ritter series, plays a relatively straight role as a reformed crook who acts as Smitty’s go-between. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi |

But Forever In My Mind – Widescreen Subtitle AC3 Dolby $14.99 Youthful idealism meets teenage lust in this teen comedy from Italy. A large group of teenage activists are occupying their high school as part of a protest against privatized education and efforts for greater standardization among students. But one of them, Silvio (Silvio Muccino), is more than a bit preoccupied by Valentina (Giulia Carmignani), a pretty girl in his class who unfortunately already has a boyfriend, Martino (Simone Pagani). One day, Silvio is hanging out with Valentina and Martino, and Martino steps away long enough for Silvio to kiss Valentina. Silvio then makes the mistake of telling his best friend Ponzi (Giuseppe Sanfelice di Monteforte) about it; soon the entire school knows, including a very angry Martino and an equally enraged Claudia (Giulia Steigerwalt), who has a crush on Silvio. As things get more complicated for him at school, Silvio is finding no respite at home; his parents (Anna Galiena and Luca De Flippo) want to know why they don’t talk anymore, his brother (Enrico Silvestrin) needs romantic advice, and his sister (Giulia Ciccone) has a secret. To get a better feel for contemporary teenage life, writer/director Gabriele Muccino collaborated on the screenplay with two 16-year-olds, Silvio Muccino and Adele Tulli, both of whom have roles in the film. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi |

Les Biches – Subtitle $14.99 Bored, wealthy Parisian socialite Frederique (St?phane Audran, then director Claude Chabrol’s wife and the star of many of his films) picks up young sidewalk artist Why (Jacqueline Sassard), brings her home, offers her a nice hot bath and coffee, and seduces her. Then Why follows Frederique to the latter’s Saint-Tropez villa, where they alter their sensuous encounters with wild parties for the idle rich. At one of these parties, Why meets Paul (Jean-Louis Trintignant), a handsome young architect, and immediately falls for him. Jealous Frederique intervenes only to lure Paul into her own arms, and the two soon depart for Paris, leaving Why alone with her frustration at the villa. Though often labeled the French Hitchcock, here Chabrol consciously abandons suspense for adult-oriented drama. ~ Yuri German, Rovi |

Growing Up Brady – Fullscreen $14.99 Did Greg and Marcia really do the nasty? Was Brady dad Robert Reed a bumbling lush? These and other burning Brady questions are in turn answered and skirted around in Growing up Brady, an account of the torrid machinations at work behind the laughter and polyester lapels of America’s 1970s alpha-clan. Maureen McCormick (Kaley Cuoco) uses pouty sexuality to try to lure her TV brother, Barry Williams (Adam Brody) into her amorous clutches, while Florence Henderson (Rebecca Bush) feels more than motherly instincts toward her TV son. Meanwhile, poor Robert Reed (Daniel Hugh Kelly) drinks a lot, and everyone revels in a Brady Bunch of dysfunction. Growing up Brady was co-executive produced by none other than Greg Brady himself, Barry Williams. ~ Rebecca Flint Marx, Rovi |

Step Into Liquid – Widescreen Subtitle AC3 Dolby Dts $14.99 Second generation surfing documentarian Dana Brown (son to Bruce Brown, who directed The Endless Summer 2) strikes out with his own original piece of filmmaking with his 2003 ode to the world’s surfing enthusiasts entitled Step Into Liquid. While in these diverse locations, Brown interviews the numerous souls whose lives have been taken over by the lure of surfing, ranging from seasoned professionals to casual hobbyists, in an attempt to dispel the myth of surfers being perpetually stoned slackers. The Boys in Company C – Widescreen $19.99 Cowritten by director Sidney J. Furie, The Boys in Company C charts the fortunes of five young Marine recruits. Led by Stan Shaw, the quintet is shipped off to Vietnam. The film makes no bones about the demoralizing effect the war has on its participants, nor the pigheadedness of the military higher-ups who think only in terms of body counts and photo ops. Of the five recruits, the most memorable are Michael Lembeck as Vinnie Fazio, the resident wiseguy (the same type of role played by Lembeck’s dad Harvey in 1950s war films) and Andrew Stevens as Billy Ray Pike, a straight-arrow type who succumbs to the lure of drugs; the others are played by Craig Wasson, James Canning, and Scott Hylands. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi |

Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein – Fullscreen Subtitle $14.99 It seems that Count Dracula (Bela Lugosi), in league with a beautiful but diabolical lady scientist (Lenore Aubert), needs a “simple, pliable” brain with which to reactivate Frankenstein’s creature (Glenn Strange). The “ideal” brain belongs to the hapless Lou Costello, whom the lady doctor woos to gain his confidence and lure him to the operating table. Lawrence Talbot (Lon Chaney Jr.), better known as the Wolf Man, arrives on the scene to warn Costello and his pal Bud Abbott of Dracula’s nefarious schemes. Throughout the film, the timorous Costello witnesses the nocturnal rituals of Dracula and the Monster, but can’t convince the ever-doubting Abbott–until the wild climax in Dracula’s castle, where the comedians are pursued by all three of the film’s monstrosities. As a bonus, the Invisible Man (voiced by an unbilled Vincent Price) shows up for “all the excitement.” ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi |
