Where is best for crappie, deep water or near shore? ?
I will be on a pond with black crappie tomorrow. I have never fished for crappie and I am unfamiliar with this pond. Its a 2,500 acre pond with a max depth of 41 feet. Should I fish deep, shallow , near inlets or islands? How about trolling with lead core line? I have several dozen shiners for bait and can get worms or artificial lures. I am in Maine so the water temperature is starting to drop. We are expecting temperatures in the 20s tonight. Any tips will be appreciated.
Flounder is on the right trac. Thumbs!
Generally, Crappie are considered twilight/night feeders.
They love to feed early morning, sundown, and at night.
Shiners are too big for Crappie. You would want to use Fathead minnows or Crappie minnows.
Your “best bet” (in the day) would be to troll a mixture of Crappie minnows, Beetle Spins, & very small (1/16 OZ) tube jigs using light-weight line (I like Berkley Fireline 4/10 Smoke with an 18″ flurocarbon 6LB leader.).
The lighter line doesn’t spook fish and allows your bait/lures a natural action.
Use a “slip-float” rig for your Crappie/Fathead Minnows.
(During the day), Troll points leading to deeper water, edges & dropoffs leading to 18-25Ft.
Keep an eye on your electronics! Crappie tend to suspend in deep water during daylight hours. If you find a school, stop trolling and start casting.
Other good baits?- Meal worms, Earthworms.
Don’t use lead-core line, it’s overkill. You need a Medium/lite action rod & reel with a sensitive tip.
Crappie will be most active right before dark. And tend to get shallow during any low light times, (cloudy, rainy days).

On the Line - $14.99 Filmmakers Peter Glenn and Jason A. Schmidt explore the non-violent movement to shut down the School of the Americas in this documentary detailing the challenges faced by protestors in the aftermath of 9/11. Also known as the Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation, The School of the Americas is an official Department of Defense facility that has trained over 60,000 Latin American soldiers since 1946. Critics of the institution argue that graduates of the program are some of the biggest human rights violators in the world. But what happens with regular Americans gather peacefully to protest a program that’s staunchly defended by the U.S. government? Susan Sarandon, Martin Sheen, School of Americas Watch founder F. Roy Bourgeois, Confessions of an Economic Hitman author John Perkins, and former U.S. Congressman Bob Barr reveal why some people are willing to face arrest and prosecution in order to challenge their government on a program that may ultimately do more harm than good. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi |

The End of the Line - $24.99 As the world’s demand for fish and other seafood increases and the technology available to commercial fisherman becomes more sophisticated, the annual harvest from global seaports has grown tremendously in recent years. However, the rise of industrialized fishing has not come without consequences, and many environmentalists and oceanographers believe that the current demand for fish and the methods used to fulfill it are taking an irreparable toll on the world’s oceans, with some speculating that the seas could be literally fished-out by 2048 if current trends do not change. Filmmaker Rupert Murray offers an in-depth look at the crisis in the world’s oceans in the documentary End of the Line, in which experts discuss some of the key factors behind the looming shortage — increased demand for endangered species, irresponsible methods employed by major fishing lines, lax enforcement of current regulations — and what can be done to head off the famine before it’s too late. End of the Line was an official selection at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi |

C?line - $19.99 The life story of French-Canadian pop diva C?line Dion is familiar enough to render itself almost iconic. The child of an economically strained family in Qu?bec (with 13 brothers and sisters), Dion began to evince vocal artistry at age five, singing in the piano bar owned by her parents. At the age of 12, Dion both authored and sang her own original tune, “Ce N’?tait qu’un R?ve”, which she recorded in a studio with assist from her parents; they promptly shipped the demo tape off to Euro music producer Ren? Angelil, who – as soon as he heard it – reportedly mortgaged his house to finance Dion’s first two albums, then aggressively helped Dion remake her physical image to turn her into an international pop star ? la Michael Jackson. When followed by a win in the 1988 Eurovision song contest and a series of blockbuster recordings (including the title track to Disney’s Beauty and the Beast), the efforts indeed paid off by rocketing her to the status of one of the most popular – and obscenely lucrative – music acts in the history of the recording industry. In the mean time, she also fell in love with, then married, Angelil. As directed by Jeff Woolnough, the Canadian telemovie C?line presents a dramatization of the chanteuse’s rise to glory; it was created without the participation, authorization or endorsement of Dion. ~ Nathan Southern, Rovi |

Dividing Line $14.99 It’s no exaggeration to say that Liverpool’s SSS (which stands for “Short Sharp Shock”) effectively put the beat-down into Merseybeat with their eponymous 2007 debut album and its furious revival of ’80s-style crossover hardcore/thrash. Here were four Limeys, comfortably picking up the torch first lit by their transatlantic heroes — Agnostic Front, Cro-Mags, etc. — some 20 years earlier, and dousing them in gallons of lighter fluid embodied by their new millennium-level controlled speed and technical precision — now that’s a fire! So for their all-important follow-up, 2008′s The Dividing Line, SSS made sure to go one better, by sticking with their no-holds-barred philosophy, even as they somehow jammed no less than 20 surprisingly distinctive “Short Sharp Shocks” (most averaging 90 seconds in length) into 32 minutes of organized mayhem. And it works, since for all of their frequent and aesthetically defining bursts of aggression, hyper-thrash nuggets like “Toxic Bee,” “Purple Reign,” and even the 43-second burp “Oil and Water” (which is very AF) still boast innumerable unexpected time changes, fluid bass runs, and metallic guitar riffs and harmonies, among other ingredients. By the time SSS “indulge” themselves with a four-minute “epic,” “Unrest in the Northwest,” which closes the album, it’s abundantly clear that they can play pretty much anything, and this makes their devotion to inflicting concentrated jabs of adrenaline all the more powerful. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia |
