I Need That Record!: The Death (or Possible Survival) of the Independent Record Store - $12.99 Director Brendan Toller examines the roles that emerging digital media, greedy record executives, manufactured music icons, and media consolidation have played in the downfall of the American independent record store. In the past decade, more than 3,000 indie record stores across the country have closed their doors. Is there anything that can be done to reverse this disheartening trend, and ensure that music lovers have an alternative to the big-box stores when they set out to make their latest purchase? I Need That Record includes commentary by Sonic Youth’s Thurston Moore, Dischord Records’ Ian MacKaye, the Black Keys’ Pat Carney, Of Montreal guitarist BP Helium, author Legs McNeil, and outspoken author/activist Noam Chomsky. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi |

The Red Balloon - $34.99 Most of French director Albert Lamorisse’s films celebrate the miracle of flight, but few were as landmark as his 1956 short subject The Red Balloon. The story, told with a minimum of dialogue, concerns a little boy (played by the director’s son Pascal) who comes across a helium-filled balloon. As he plays with his new acquisition, the boy discovers that the balloon seemingly has a mind of its own. The little red orb follows its new “master” all through the streets of Paris, then dogs the boy’s trail into the schoolroom, which drives the teacher to comic distraction. Towards the end, it seems as though boy and balloon will be parted forever….but director Lamorisse has a delightful surprise in store for us. In an unusual move, The Red Balloon in its American TV premiere was introduced by Ronald Reagan as an episode of the CBS anthology G.E. Theater on April 2, 1961. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi |

Everything Is Nice: Matador Records 10th Anniversary Anthology - $14.99 Matador Records may well have been the finest indie rock label of the 1990s. Everything Is Nice: Matador Records 10th Anniversary Anthology collects music videos from a handful of Matador acts, including Pavement, Cat Power, Helium, The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, Guitar Wolf, Cornelius, Pizzicato Five, and more. Also included is background on the label, and brief interludes from friends and associates of Matador. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi |

If I Breathe I Fall Asleep $15.99 The debut album by Baltimore indie kids Avec recalls a time roughly a decade prior to their own, an era between the twin poles of grunge and nu-metal when a generation of young women fronted tough-cookie guitar bands. If I Breathe I Fall Asleep mixes Shawna Potter’s whisper-to-a-yelp vocals with a similarly dynamic strain of pop-oriented, emo-tinged indie rock. It’s an appealing sound: Potter’s a good-to-great singer whose closest point of comparison is probably Helium’s Mary Timony, and she and lead guitarist Brooks Harlan know their way around the blend of My Bloody Valentine-style single-note drones and big riffs ? la Smashing Pumpkins that defined indie rock circa 1994 or so. Two problems, however: Harlan’s occasional lead vocals are no more welcome than D’Arcy’s were in the Pumpkins, and the songwriting lacks the big hooks that would really put the tunes over. The one exception is the terrific, sexually charged opener “While You’re Down There,” a frustrated pop/rock winner that features both Potter and Harlan at their respective best. Come to think of it, most of those old alt rock bands only had one really great song, too, so the resemblance comes full circle. ~ Stewart Mason |

Boathouse Detectives – Widescreen Subtitle AC3 Dolby $19.99 Four young detectives race to save a desperate little girl from getting shipped off to boarding school by her monstrous step-mother in this family friendly mystery adventure from the makers of Clubhouse Detectives. Anna McKenzie is a seven-year-old girl with a big problem: her evil step-mother has hatched a plan to ship her off to boarding school until she’s 18, and send her beloved canine sidekick to the doggie prison. In a last-ditch attempt to reach her beloved grandmother before it’s too late, Anna attaches a note to a helium balloon, and watches as her plea for help floats up into the clouds. When the message reaches 10-year-old Gage Williams, the young boy gathers his detective friends in their floating clubhouse, and together they hatch a plan to break Anna free. It’s a big task for such young detectives, but if Gage and his pals can find a way to get Anna away from her step-mother and back into the arms of her grandmother, there’s no mystery this determined team can’t solve. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi |

Distillation [LP] $18.98 Personnel includes: Erin McKeown (vocals, various instruments); Dave Chalfant(electric guitar, upright & electric basses, percussion, samples); Katryna Nields, Beth Amsel (background vocals).Recorded at Sackamusic Studios, Amhearst, Massachusetts between October 1999 & January 2000.Virginia-born and New England-based, Erin McKeown’s musical roots seem to lie somewhere in the deep South. Throughout her aptly named debut, DISTILLATION, you can hear echoes of Robert Johnson, G. Love, the Faulknerian landscape of the first couple albums by the Band, and most obviously, the rural mythos best explored, from entirely different angles, by those Louisiana-born Williams non-sisters, Victoria and Lucinda. While nowhere near as helium-pitched, McKeown shares Victoria’s fondness for odd, jazz-inflected phrasing, especially on the swooping vocal melody of the Tin Pan Alleyish “Didn’t They?,” on which McKeown soars and dives like a drunken seagull, or the Billie Holidayesque trills in “The Little Cowboy.” What McKeown has in common with Lucinda Williams is her wry but essentially romantic, tradition-rooted but not bound lyrical stance. The countryish “La Petite Mort,” with its sly sex-and-religion twining, would not have sounded out of place on CAR WHEELS ON A GRAVEL ROAD. |

Adventures of the Flying Cadets [Serial] - $5.99 Four enterprising air cadets are suspected of a series of murders actually committed by The Black Hangman, a mysterious Nazi agent. A typical war-time serial, this Universal offering basically wasted the talents of one of the best screen villains in Hollywood history, the demonic-looking Eduardo Cianelli. Cianelli plays Karl Von Heiger, alias The Black Hangman, who has discovered a lost helium deposit in Darkest Africa. To safeguard the location, Von Heiger and mining engineer Arthur Galt (Robert Armstrong) kill the members of an expedition except for Professor Mason (Selmer Jackson) and his lovely daughter Andre (Jennifer Holt), whom they imprison. To clear their names, the four cadets — Danny Collins (Johnny Downs), Jinx Roberts (Bobby Jordan), Scrapper MacKay (Ward Wood), and Zombie Parker (Billy Benedict) — go in search for the villains, rescuing Mason & daughter along the way. By the 13th and final chapter, “The Toll of Treason,” the boys have more or less singlehandedly wiped out the Nazi presence in Africa. Top-billed Johnny Downs, a former child actor, was better known for a series of lightweight campus comedies. Leading lady Jennifer Holt was the daughter of veteran action star Jack Holt and sister of Tim Holt. She spent most of her screen career in B-Westerns. ~ Hans J. Wollstein, Rovi |

Napoleon – Subtitle $8.99 Aimed at children, this live-action Australian adventure follows an adorable golden retriever puppy on a cross-country search for the dingoes who comprise his doggy roots. Though the cocky young puppy’s real name is Muffin, he prefers to think of himself as Napoleon. His quest begins at a children’s birthday party where he frolics gaily with the children until he lands in a basket that has several helium balloons tied to it and is suddenly carried away. Eventually he lands on the rocky shore of distant Sydney Harbor. There he is befriended by a parrot-like galah named Birdo Lucci (other sly in-jokes for film buffs abound in the story). Together, the two buddies head into the bush in search of Napoleon’s forebears. Along the way, they encounter a variety of native Australian critters including a koala, a kindly mother kangaroo, a hissy frill-necked lizard, a mean snake and a terrifying black cat who mistakes Napoleon for a giant mouse. Eventually, Napoleon meets his distant relatives too. Like the animals in Babe, this film’s closest relative, the animals in this outing are endowed with human voices and qualities. ~ Sandra Brennan, Rovi |

Moon – Widescreen Dubbed Subtitle AC3 $12.99 An astronaut miner extracting the precious moon gas that promises to reverse the Earth’s energy crisis nears the end of his three-year contract, and makes an ominous discovery in this psychological sci-fi film starring Sam Rockwell and Kevin Spacey. For three long years, Sam Bell has dutifully harvested Helium 3 for Lunar, a company that claims it holds the key to solving humankind’s energy crisis. As Sam’s contract comes to an end, the lonely astronaut looks forward to returning to his wife and daughter down on Earth, where he will retire early and attempt to make up for lost time. His work on the Selene moon base has been enlightening — the solitude helping him to reflect on the past and overcome some serious anger issues — but the isolation is starting to make Sam uneasy. With only two weeks to go before he begins his journey back to Earth, Sam starts feeling strange: he’s having inexplicable visions, and hearing impossible sounds. Then, when a routine extraction goes horribly awry, it becomes apparent that Lunar hasn’t been entirely straightforward with Sam about their plans for replacing him. The new recruit seems strangely familiar, and before Sam returns to Earth, he will grapple with the realization that the life he has created may not be entirely his own. Up there, hundreds of thousands of miles from home, it appears that Sam’s contract isn’t the only thing about to expire. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi |

Red Balloon/White Mane - $14.99 Includes:Crin Blanc (1952) The Red Balloon (1956) Crin Blanc The great African American character actor Frank Silvera was afforded a rare movie starring role in the French short subject The White Mane (Crin Blanc) The title alludes to the film’s actual protagonist, a courageous white stallion. Despite repeated attempts, the stallion steadfastly refuses to be captured and broken. There is a delicate fantasy element to the proceedings that might have been shattered had director Albert Lamorisse extended the film beyond its perfect 38 minutes. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi The Red Balloon Most of French director Albert Lamorisse’s films celebrate the miracle of flight, but few were as landmark as his 1956 short subject The Red Balloon.

When her plumbing goes awry, Olive immediately calls Popeye to help fix the leak–a sure-fire recipe for disaster. This time, however, Popeye isn’t sabotaged by his rival Bluto, but by the capriciousness of little Swee’pea. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi All-New Popeye Hour: Ship Ahoy Popeye and his nephews Pipeye, Peepeye and Poopeye set out for the high seas, where our hero plans to teach the boys how to sail a boat. The intrepid foursome have not, alas, taken into consideration the possibility that their old nemesis Bluto might want to scuttle their seafaring. But when Bluto outsmarts himself, it is Uncle Popeye and the boys who make certain that everything will be clear sailing from now on. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi All-New Popeye Hour: Popeye Goes Sightseeing This time, the gang is visiting New York City. While Olive goes on a shopping spree, Popeye babysits Swee’pea–who, in the fine tradition of such theatrical cartoon classics as Lost and Foundry) soon wanders away and ends up on such lofty heights as the Statue of Liberty and the World Trade Center (a comic highlight that today is tinged with poignancy). Will spinach save the day, or is Swee’pea literally riding for a fall? ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi All-New Popeye Hour: Chips Off the Old Ice Block Popeye offers to teach Swee’pea how to skate. Naturally, egotistical Bluto plans to make Popeye look ridiculous while simultaneously offering his own skiing tips. But when Bluto attempts to show Swee’pea how to jump over several barrels, the stunt goes awry, and Popeye is forced to rescue both erstwhile skaters–with the usual spinach “booster”. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi All-New Popeye Hour: Swee’Pea Plagues a Parade Swee’pea dresses up as a strongman (just like Popeye) when he marches in a parade. Alas, the infant’s attention span is as unreliable as ever, and before long he is distracted by a helium-filled balloon. As Olive screams and carries on from the sidelines, Popeye tries to rescue Swee’pea, leaving the parade grounds in a shambles in the process. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi All-New Popeye Hour: Polly Wants Some Spinach When Olive’s parrot Polly flies the coop, it’s Popeye to the rescue. Hoping to score points with Olive, Bluto likewise chases after Polly, sabotaging Popeye’s efforts all along the way. But the fun really begins when a lookalike parrot flaps onto the scene–and as often happens in Popeye’s TV’s adventures, a maximum of eff |

(2003), MPAA Rating: PG Napoleon Aimed at children, this live-action Australian adventure follows an adorable golden retriever puppy on a cross-country search for the dingoes who comprise his doggy roots. Though the cocky young puppy’s real name is Muffin, he prefers to think of himself as Napoleon. His quest begins at a children’s birthday party where he frolics gaily with the children until he lands in a basket that has several helium balloons tied to it and is suddenly carried away. Like the animals in Babe, this film’s closest relative, the animals in this outing are endowed with human voices and qualities. ~ Sandra Brennan, Rovi Fluke A man learns to be a better person when he turns into a dog in this thoughtful and surprisingly somber drama for the family. Tom (Matthew Modine), a businessman, is so driven to succeed that he all but ignores his wife Carol (Nancy Travis) and their son Brian (Max Pomeranc). Tom’s perspective changes when he dies in an auto accident and is reincarnated as Fluke, a big brown dog. Fluke wants nothing more than to be with Carol and Brian, but he gets lost as he tries to make his way home. He’s adopted by a homeless woman, and with her, Fluke truly learns to give and receive love for the first time, but when she dies, the dog is left with nowhere to go. Fluke is soon befriended by Rumbo (voice of Samuel L. Jackson), a guard dog at a junkyard who teaches him how to survive on the street, but before long, Fluke once again hears the call from his heart to find Carol and Brian. Fluke also stars Eric Stolz, Ron Perlman, and Jon Polito. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi Good Boy! For his debut feature, John Hoffman wrote and directed this effects-heavy family film based on the story Dogs from Outer Space by Zeke Richardson. Produced by Jim Henson Productions, Good Boy! presents the idea that dogs are actually an intelligent alien species sent to earth thousands of years ago to spy on humans in preparation for a full-scale invasion and takeover. But when the spies stop reporting back to the home planet, Canid 3942 (voiced by Matthew Broderick) is sent to earth to investigate. Once there, Canid 3942 encounters Owen Baker (Liam Aiken), a young boy who runs a dog-walking service. Owen befriends the space-dog, renaming him Hubble. When it becomes obvious that the dogs of earth have forgotten their mission, Hubble enlists the |
