Berimbaum (Bonus Track) (Japan) $39.99 A veteran of the Brazilian samba scene, Morelenbaum has an impeccable pedigree in the music. But for this album, she’s chosen as a common thread songs by the great Vinicius DeMoraes, whether as sole or co-composer. It makes for a great theme, with so much quality work to choose from. What makes this so fascinating are the arrangements used to frame the pieces, like the light Brazilian funk used on “Tomara” and “Berimbau,” for example, which both float, lighter than air, over truly imaginative drum programming and instrumental performances. Morelenbaum’s glorious voice sets the standard throughout, breathy but gloriously melodic (she also deserves great credit for her production work here). Even brass sounds feather-light, gliding by the songs. And yet it retains a real groove, a toe-tapping funk that’s irresistible and does full justice to the songs themselves. Even a bossa ballad like “Insensetaz” is given quirky little touches, like the irresistible cello line by Morelenbaum’s husband, Jacques. It’s an album of details and quirks in the melodies and rhythms, gentle and lulling, but still constantly pushing forward, and rewarding no matter how many times you listen to it. ~ Chris Nickson |

Motive [Bonus Tracks] $15.99 Simon Toulson-Clarke was left with the unenviable task of following up The Circle & the Square and he did so admirably, even without the help of Julian Close and David Motion. Gone are the world music trappings and First Nations beats, to be replaced by sheer pop bliss. “Train” gets the album off and chugging with its refrain of “Go internationale!,” while “Moving” has an infectious pop hook emblematic of the remainder of the disc. But the true highlights come in the second half of the album, with “The Power Is Down” and the irresistible “Now Ask.” By the time Toulson-Clarke has reached the end of “New England,” he has accomplished the incredible feat of creating a second masterpiece without a single bad song. The tranquil “Douce,” with its sultry backing vocals, is a slow-burner, while the celebratory “Fistibal-Festival” is perhaps the most typically Caribbean of the tracks on offer here. But Jean’s political message and his dance-floor aspirations find their smoothest blend on upbeat dance tracks “Fanm Kreyol” and “Haitian Mafia” (which features Foxy Brown), offering irresistible beats and rapid-fire Creole exhortations that bypass the synapses and go straight for the hips. |

G.H. $5.99 William “Smokey” Robinson’s long career as a writer, singer, producer, and arranger is the stuff of pop history, and a collection like this one, which brings together the key tracks from his 1960s and early-’70s material with the Miracles, with his smooth R&B hits as a solo artist in the later ’70s and ’80s, really shows what a phenomenal artist Robinson has always been. The classic Miracles hits are here, including “The Tears of a Clown” and “The Tracks of My Tears,” as well as Robinson’s biggest solo hits, like the lush, irresistible “Cruisin’” from 1979 and his genre-defining “Quiet Storm,” which lent its title to a whole new R&B radio format, although it will always be a little jarring to hear the earlier Miracles material next to the smoother solo stuff, even if most of the musical ingredients are the same. Duran Duran and their peers updated that sound for a new decade, adopting punk’s DIY attitude and helping to give birth to dance-rock along the way by adding a disco-ish beat.Subsequent releases would find the band moving more toward straight pop, becoming simultaneously less dance-oriented and less arty. The 1981 debut, however, is full of thumping, club-friendly beats and long, atmospheric tunes full of extended synthesizer-centered interludes. The fact that the boys were pop-savvy enough to add irresistible choruses to “Girls on Film,” “Careless Memories,” and “Planet Earth” doesn’t hurt matters. |
