Preludes Fugues & Riffs: Influence Of Jazz $8.99 This collection contains both mono and stereo recordings.Since its genesis jazz has fascinated classical musicians, and this disc documents some of the traffic at the crossroads. Among the first European composers to get into jazz was Darius Milhaud, whose ‘La Creation du Monde’ joyfully appropriates the instrumentation and energy of early jazz, much as Igor Stravinsky’s ‘Ebony Concerto,’ written for the Woody Herman band, distills the essence of late swing-era cool.Of course there’s George Gershwin’s ‘Rhapsody in Blue’ which seems to swallow jazz, pop, Broadway, and Hollywood in a single gulp, especially in this wildly animated performance with an original Gershwin piano roll playing the solo part as Michael Tilson Thomas and his orchestra do their best to keep up. Then, at the other end of the metabolic spectrum, Gil Evans’ legendary adaptation of Rodrigo’s nostalgic ‘Concierto de Aranjuez’ showcases the trumpet of Miles Davis in mellow repose. All the performances come from the Sony/Columbia archives, with maestro Leonard Bernstein in the Milhaud, clarinetist Benny Goodman in the Stravinsky, and both together in Bernstein’s ‘Prelude, Fugue, and Riffs.’ |

Australia’s Backyard Killers - $9.99 In the hour-long documentary Australia’s Backyard Killers, naturalist Greg Grainger offers ample evidence that the deadliest and most venomous Australian creatures are scarcely confined to the outback; to the contrary, many are commonplace enough that they have begun inhabiting the backyards of suburban homes – terrifying Aussie residents with the spectacle of tarantulas turning up in the front grass or an alligator prowling along the bottom of the family pool. Species on display in this outing include mouse spiders, funnel-web spiders, paralysis-inducing bees and a Gwarda with a taste for swimming pools, plus snakes that turned up in cupboards and saltwater crocs that became entangled in backyard fences. ~ Nathan Southern, Rovi |

Live at the Marquee 1977 $14.99 The Vibrators: Knox, John Ellis (vocals, guitar); Gary Tibbs (bass, background vocals); Eddie (drums).Recorded live at the Roundhouse, London, England on March 26, 1978.That the Vibrators were one of the much less important, second-division acts on the original 1976-1977 English punk scene yet were still this great, and this fun, says all you need to know about how incredible that scene (and that era) was. They may not have been the Pistols, Clash, Buzzcocks, Damned, and so on, but this gang of social deviants had their place, then and now. Despite a few silly, bad-taste lyrics (not such a bad idea then), they lit up the night with infectious dynamism, a crude, get-right-to-it approach, and a pile of trad-based riffs — something made doubly clear by the no-overdubs, total verve Live at the Marquee. Years later, these live, speed-ridden versions of “London Girls,” “Whips and Furs,” “I Need a Slave,” “Baby, Baby,” and other Pure Mania kicks still make you want to get up and pogo around your cramped living room. And even Iggy’s Stooges and the Rolling Stones would feel like joining you in your jump-around if they heard what these guys do to “No Fun/Raw Power” and “Jumping Jack Flash.” All the set is cut from the same mold, and in this rare case, it doesn’t frickin’ matter. Rock & roll suss and speed buzz meeting in this instant fit is something no music fan with any grits could ever tire of. Even the shouted song introductions are a wake-up jolt like a big-gulp coffee. ~ Jack Rabid |

Love and Death on Long Island - $12.99 Can a stodgy intellectual who regards the 20th century as a waste of time find happiness with an American teen idol who doesn’t really know him? That’s the question posed in this gentle satiric comedy. Giles De’ath (John Hurt), who takes great pains to remind people that his surname is pronounced “Day-ath,” is a well-regarded British author whose wife passed away a decade ago. Since then, Giles has retreated into a world of his own; he is thoroughly disinterested in contemporary culture and lives in the 20th century only to the degree that it is absolutely necessary. However, one night Giles accidentally locks himself out of his apartment just as a rainstorm has begun to open up the sky. Soaked to the skin, he takes refuge in a nearby movie theater, since he’s heard that the works of E.M. Forster have lately become popular screen fodder. However, once inside the multiplex, Giles discovers to his disgust that he’s accidentally bought a ticket for a low-brow teen flick called Hot Pants College II. Just as he’s about to register his repugnance with the management, actor Ronnie Bostock (Jason Priestley) appears on screen, and immediately Giles is entranced. In Ronnie, Giles discovers an unexpected sort of beauty that he’s never considered before, and he’s eager to learn more about the young actor. However, Giles soon discerns that reading up on his new obsession means buying teen-oriented fanzines (whose covers proclaim him “Snoggable!”), where he learns that Ronnie’s own cultural signposts include Axl Rose and Stephen King, whose names could just as well be Sanskrit to Giles. He also discovers that to view the rest of Ronnie’s screen work, he must visit a video rental store, which means he must first purchase a VCR, and that he’ll also require a (gulp!) television in order for the VCR to work. Eventually, Giles finds out that Ronnie lives in a small town on Long Island, and decides to fly there, hatching a scheme to meet Ronnie by first making the acquaintance of Audrey (Fionna Loewi), Ronnie’s fashion model girlfriend. Based on the acclaimed short novel by Gilbert Adair, Love and Death on Long Island was adapted for the screen and directed by Richard Kwietniowski. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi |

Dead Man Shake [LP] $17.98 Grandpaboy includes: Covington (guitar); Elrod (harmonica); Twixt Pine (bass); Twiddle (drums). So, like all of Paul Westerberg’s loyal fans, you’ve been dreaming of the day that the great cranky genius of slop-rock would record a blues album, right? OK, probably not, but Westerberg went and did it anyway (under the guise of his alter ego, Grandpaboy), and Dead Man Shake turns out to be a better album than you might expect under the circumstances. Like the previous Grandpaboy long-player, Mono, Dead Man Shake was recorded in Westerberg’s basement studio, with “Winthrope Marion Purcival V” once again handling all the instruments, and though one can’t help but wish the guy would find a decent drummer, the shabby but emphatic sound of these tracks at once honors the blues-leaning material on deck and suits Westerberg’s musical instincts quite well. (The thick echo and chunky guitar textures also recall the sound of the late-’50s/early-’60s Chess Records sessions, though one doubts the similarity was at all intentional.) Dead Man Shake was released around the same time as the soundtrack to Westerberg’s documentary video Come Feel Me Tremble, and both seem to be put together from Westerberg’s B-list material, but Dead Man Shake in comparison appears to be B-plus product; his 12-bar meandering on “No Matter What You Say” and “Natural Mean Lover” allow him to make good use of his snarkiness, “Vampires and Failures,” “O.D. Blues,” and “Get a Move On” suggest they could have been A-list material with a bit more work, and if the Minneapolis City Council goes on a collective bender long enough, it might make “MPLS” the town’s new anthem. Westerberg also reveals a strong command for covers here; while his takes on Jimmy Reed (“Take Out Some Insurance”) and Hank Williams (“I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry”) are terrific, the bigger surprise is that you can say the same of his interpretations of John Prine (“Souvenirs”) and even, gulp, Anthony Newley (“What Kind of Fool Am I”). Dead Man Shake sounds like something Paul Westerberg tossed off for fun in a week or so, but this time one can say that in a good way, and for simple gut-level satisfaction it’s more engaging than the bulk of his post-Replacements catalog, though anyone expecting a masterpiece will be in for an unpleasant awakening. ~ Mark Deming |

Way We Are $13.99 This is the second effort by a band that cites influences as varied as La Monte Young, Boredoms, Aphex Twin, Dmitry Shostakovich, and Can, not to mention Friedrich Nietzche and trees. (Actual trees, that is — not a band called Trees.) As one might reasonably expect, the music is a crazy and at times inspired pastiche of sounds and textures: “Medman” features sounds of gently shattering glass and the chattering of electronic jungle fauna over a grinding, off-kilter rhythmic loop; “Saltwater Trails” starts out with either a Jon Hassell-esque treated trumpet or an equally distorted human voice (it’s hard to say which), followed by spacious horror-movie atmospherics. “Shapeshifter” consists of tape manipulations and various grades of white and grey noise, and the title track ends the program with densely layered reverberations that ebb and flow like an early Steve Reich piece, followed by otherworldly howls, something that sounds like a UFO landing, and rattling chains — then suddenly everything smoothes out into a gentle ambience that changes colors and textures gradually for the remainder of the track’s 34-minute length; drums and submerged vocals emerge briefly at the very end. Like the rest of the album, it’s a deeply strange and oddly lovely listening experience. ~ Rick Anderson |
