If Looks Could Kill – Widescreen $24.99 Television flavor-of-the-month Richard Grieco made his feature-film debut in this juvenile spoof of James Bond films. He plays a high-school senior named Michael Corben who has flunked out of his French class, but has the chance to make up his grade on the French Club’s summer trip to Europe. On the airplane booked to transport the French Club to France is another man by the name of Michael Corben, and this man happens to be a super-spy. When he is killed, the hapless high-school senior is mistaken for the real spy by British intelligence. He becomes involved in a mad plot by Augustus Steranko (Roger Rees) in which Steranko and his evil assistant Ilsa Grunt (Linda Hunt) plan to dominate the European continent by converting the gold standard to coins that will bear Steranko’s likeness. Corben goes along with it when he is provided with a red sports car, a tuxedo, and some high-tech weapons. Along with all the spy accouterments, he latches onto a sexy helper — Mariska (Gabrielle Anwar). ~ Paul Brenner, Rovi |

Good Morning Mr. Walker $14.99 Joseph Spence.Liner Note Author: Jack Viertel.Recording information: 05/16/1971.Photographer: Guy Droussart.Arranger: Joseph Spence. With over 60 minutes and 21 tracks, adding ten to the 1972 release, it would be hard to find a much more definitive collection of Bahamian Joseph Spence. Featuring a deep repertoire of folk songs, hymns, sea chanties, children’s songs, and pop tunes, Spence’s incredibly intricate, polyrhythmic guitar playing rivals that of the American country-blues greats. His vocal technique has to be heard to be believed, as it comes across as a strange combination of an exuberant grunt, a cough, and a laugh, all serving the purpose of accenting the melody carried by the guitar. Doubtless, Spence was an extremely unique and original artist, but it appears that his singing style was probably formed as much from his admitted lack of familiarity with the lyrics of his material as any visionary innovation, as he usually doesn’t include much more than a fragment of a verse and a chorus with the rest being vocal improvisation. Still, Good Morning Mr. Walker, also including seven tracks from a live performance, is the perfect showcase for this rare talent. ~ Matt Fink |

Private Benjamin – AC3 $5.99 Devastated when her brand-new husband Albert Brooks) drops dead on their wedding night, Jewish American princess Judy Benjamin (Goldie Hawn) is receptive to the pitch delivered by a duplicitous recruiter for the Women’s Army Corps. Quickly adivsed by topkick Captain Lewis (Eileen Brennan) that she should not look forward to the private room, fancy clothes and sauna bath that she’d been promised, Judy is forced to go through basic training like any other “grunt”. This turns out to be a real growth experience for the pampered Private Benjamin, who for the first time in her life has to work for her privileges. A brief misadventure with a lascivious paratroop officer (Robert Webber) nearly sours Judy on army life, but she turns out to be a darned good soldier-and a woman with a highly developed sense of self-esteem, which enables her to weather a further disappointing romantic fling with French phsycian Henri Tremont (Armand Assante). Private Benjamin turned out to be one of Goldie Hawn’s most profitable vehicles. The 1981-82 TV sitcom spinoff starred Lorna Patterson in Goldie’s role, with Eileen Brennan repeating her film characterization of the long-suffering Captain Lewis. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi |

Atavism $9.99 Arguably no artist was as instrumental in helping to reinvent and reestablish the San Francisco heavy metal scene — formerly the unchallenged birth-place of thrash — into one of the planet’s most eclectic and unpredictable, than vocalist/guitarist Mike Scalzi — a lynchpin of the community, both via his primary vehicle, The Lord Weird Slough Feg, and parallel involvement in cult favorites Hammers of Misfortune. But, having abruptly announced his dissociation from Hammers, Scalzi appears fully focused on Slough Feg as he hasn’t in years; and thus, the naming of the group’s fifth album as Atavism signifies not only a renewed commitment to their career-long, classic metal orientation, but to the band itself. And in classic Slough Feg fashion, Atavism’s highest achievement lies in reaching back through the decades to revisit numerous, timeless metallic genres, then recasting them in a thoroughly modern, at times contrastingly avant-garde light. New Wave of British Heavy Metal fire and economy pervade songs like “I Will Kill You/You Will Die” and “Agnostic Grunt”; regal Gaelic twin guitar harmonies lend a Thin Lizzy flavor to “Hiberno-Latin Invasion” and the lyrically apropos “Man out of Time”; dynamic, progressive metal pomp fuels the “Eumaeus the Swineheard”/”Curse of Athena” tandem; straightforward rock & roll surfaces in “Starport Blues”; and there are a few Iron Maiden-like instrumentals in “Portcullis” and “Climax of a Generation.” What’s more, for all their head-spinning variety, all of the above are united by the dazzling speed and technical proficiency of thrash, for yet another fitting tribute to Slough Feg’s home base and its glorious past. There’s also a welcome departure provided by the title track’s acoustic classical guitars, and, consistently brilliant six-string dueling waged between Scalzi and long-time partner-in-crime John Cobbett — particularly on “Agony Slalom” and “Atavism II.” Consider, at last, that much of the music is surprisingly immediate, regardless of its often challenging and oblique lyrics, and Atavism’s biggest potential may be introducing new listeners to the world of Slough Feg, and related eclectic metal bands. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia |

Quah $6.99 Personnel: Jorma Kaukonen (vocals, acoustic, electric & 12-string guitar); Tom Hobson (vocals, acoustic guitar); Tom Salisbury (arranger, conductor); Gene Tortora (dobro); Nathan Rubin, Thomas Halpin, Daniel Kobialka, Carl Pederson, Eva Karasik, Anne Kish, Mischa Myers (violin); Nancy Ellis, Miriam Dye, Mary Jo Ahlborn, Thomas Heimberg (viola); Melinda Ross (cello); Arthur Krebiel French horn).Recorded at Wally Heider Studios, San Francisco, California between 1972 & 1974. Originally released on Grunt (BFL1-0209). Includes liner notes by Jeff Tamarkin.By 1974, Jefferson Airplane guitarist Jorma Kaukonen had already started on his own path with his blues-rock side project, Hot Tuna, but with the Airplane’s final flight behind him, he moved definitively beyond electrified psychedelic rock with his first solo album, QUAH. Most of the album is just Jorma and his acoustic guitar, and while this sparse format is ostensibly similar to some of the later Hot Tuna releases, it focuses much more on folk-tinged singer-songwriter balladry than on the country blues favored by Tuna. Those familiar with Jorma’s Airplane ballads, such as “Good Shepherd,” will recognize the sensibility at work here. Of course, there are some tracks where Jorma showcases his mastery of blues fingerpicking, and even some of the most overtly folkie tracks bear a bluesy tinge, but on the whole, QUAH is of a piece with the troubadour movement that was still all the rage in the mid-’70s. |

Platoon – Widescreen Dubbed Subtitle AC3 $14.99 Oliver Stone’s breakthrough as a director, Platoon is a brutally realistic look at a young soldier’s tour of duty in Vietnam. Chris Taylor (Charlie Sheen) is a college student who quits school to volunteer for the Army in the late ’60s. He’s shipped off to Vietnam, where he serves with a culturally diverse group of fellow soldiers under two men who lead the platoon: Sgt. Barnes (Tom Berenger), whose facial scars are a mirror of the violence and corruption of his soul, and Sgt. Elias (Willem Dafoe), who maintains a Zen-like calm in the jungle and fights with both personal and moral courage even though he no longer believes in the war. After a few weeks “in country,” Taylor begins to see the na?vet? of his views of the war, especially after a quick search for enemy troops devolves into a round of murder and rape. Unlike Hollywood’s first wave of Vietnam movies (including The Deer Hunter, Apocalypse Now, and Coming Home), Platoon is a grunt’s-eye view of the war, touching on moral issues but focusing on the men who fought the battles and suffered the wounds. In this sense, it resembles older war movies more than its Vietnam peers, as it mixes familiar elements of onscreen battle with small realistic details: bugs, jungle rot, exhaustion, C-rations, marijuana, and counting the days before you go home. This mix of traditional war movie elements with a contemporary sensibility won Platoon four Oscars including Best Picture and Best Director, and a reputation as one of the definitive modern war films. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi |

Saints and Soldiers - $14.99 A handful of fighting men must defy the odds to save their own lives and thousands of others in this drama set during World War II. In late 1944, a band of nearly a hundred American soldiers are making their way through a wooded region of Belgium when they are ambushed by German forces in a battle that became known as “the Malmady Massacre.” A small group of American soldiers are able to take cover — hard-boiled Sgt. Gunderson (Peter Holden), a grunt from Louisiana called Kendrick (Lawrence Bagby), a cynical medical officer from Brooklyn by the name of Gould (Alex Niver), and Cpl. Greer (Corbin Allred), known to his pals as “Deacon.” Deacon is a devout Mormon who doesn’t drink or smoke, carries his Bible with him at all times, and spent time in Germany as a missionary before the war, giving him an empathy with the enemy that sometimes puts him at odds with the other men. Deacon is also a master sharpshooter who has been having a crisis of conscience after nearly killing an innocent Belgian family while on patrol. Surrounded by Germans and with seemingly no means of escape, Gunderson and the men encounter Oberon Winley (Kirby Heybourne), a British intelligence officer trapped by the massacre. Winley has top secret information that could change the course of the war if it gets to Allied commanders in time, so Gunderson, Deacon, Kendrick, and Gould must find a way to get themselves and Winley away from Malmady before its too late. Inspired by a true story, Saints and Soldiers was the first feature film from Ryan Little, a Utah-based filmmaker who previously made a number of short subjects relating to issues of faith in the Church of Latter Day Saints. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi |

Platoon – Widescreen $4.99 Oliver Stone’s breakthrough as a director, Platoon is a brutally realistic look at a young soldier’s tour of duty in Vietnam. Private Benjamin/Protocol - $12.99 Includes:Private Benjamin (1980), MPAA Rating: R Protocol (1984), MPAA Rating: PG Private Benjamin Devastated when her brand-new husband Albert Brooks) drops dead on their wedding night, Jewish American princess Judy Benjamin (Goldie Hawn) is receptive to the pitch delivered by a duplicitous recruiter for the Women’s Army Corps. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi Protocol In this routine spoof of government and media foibles, Sunny (Goldie Hawn) is an ordinary cocktail waitress, someone who graduated in the top 75% of her class. When she dramatically prevents the assassination of a visiting dignitary, an Emir (Richard Romanus) from an Arab country. the event puts her dead center at a whirlwind of media attention, and she gets her a job in the protocol department of the government — nothing that cocktail waitressing can really prepare one to do. Sunny’s nemesis is the evil Mrs. St. John (Gail Strickland) who does not appreciate her inane blunders, and with a few cohorts, she schemes to ship Sunny off to join the Emir’s harem, in exchange for a military base in his country. The daffy ex-cocktail waitress is not also blind and deaf, and before long, she suspects that something underhanded is in fact, underfoot. Now she has to find out what it is and how to stop it. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi |
