Godzilla’s return to the big screen mixes old and new; this monster of a flick infuses ’90s special effects into the classic tale of a lizard gone awry. In effect, the movie’s soundtrack embraces a similar resurrection: established artists either breathing new life into well-worn tunes or showcasing exclusive tracks and new lineups. And, like the movie, the soundtrack only succeeds on certain leve…

Fans of the early-’60s sitcom are naturally disappointed by this more juvenile approach to the old concept, which found Navy Captain McHale commanding a merry band of hustlers in the Pacific. Tom Arnold plays the updated title character, and while there’s every reason he could have done a fine job, the script eschews the show’s tone for something broader and dumber. Killing Machine

Killing Machine

$11.99

To many of their American fans, Judas Priest’s fifth album, Hell Bent for Leather, has become synonymous both with the group’s adoption of a leather-and-studs wardrobe (a byproduct of singer Rob Halford’s then still closeted gay lifestyle) and with crystallizing the more concise and versatile heavy rock songwriting that would be repeatedly polished to a platinum sheen by the early ’80s. Funny thing is, Priest fans everywhere but the U.S. felt the very same ways about Priest’s Killing Machine LP, which is not at all surprising once one realizes they are in fact the same album, by and large. As the story goes, Columbia Records’ U.S. office objected to the original title’s violent connotations and insisted on using the far more sexually charged, homoerotic alternative — making this possibly the first and last occasion in history in which Europe chose violence over sex and America sex over violence, instead of the other way ’round. Anyway, other than the album titles and the addition of Priest’s cover of Fleetwood Mac’s “The Green Manalishi (With the Two-Pronged Crown)” to the U.S. track listing, both editions were otherwise virtually identical, down to the cover art and remaining song sequencing. Which brings us back to the aforementioned laser-focused but diverse songs contained within. On the one hand, high-powered juggernauts like “Delivering the Goods,” “Running Wild,” and “Hell Bent for Leather” kept the Priest metal machine firing on all cylinders; on the other, infectious numbers like “Rock Forever,” “Take on the World,” and “Burnin’ Up” crossed new thresholds of rock radio accessibility; and, having broken through the “ballad barrier” with Stained Class’ “Beyond the Realms of Death,” the band now felt emboldened to push well beyond it with ever more broadly appealing new offerings like “Evening Star” and “Before the Dawn.” These are the real reasons, above all else, why Killing Machine/Hell Bent for Leather was such a pivotal album in Judas Priest’s career, and remains a favorite among fans across the world, no matter what title is attached to it. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia

Cee-Lo Green Is the Soul Machine [Clean]

Cee-Lo Green Is the Soul Machine [Clean]

$6.99

This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files.Personnel includes: Cee-Lo, Pharrell, Jazze Pha, T.I., Ludacris, Big Rube, G-Rock, Timbaland, Menta Malone (rap vocals).Producers include: Traxx, The Neptunes, Thomas Callaway, Timabaland, Jazze Pha.Recorded at Darp Studios and Stankonia Recording, Atlanta, Georgia; Eagle Sound Studios, Doraville, Georgia; Hovecraft Recording Studios, Virginia Beach, Virginia; Criteria-Hit Factory, Miami, Florida.A hip-hop artist perpetually swerving from a high-pitched rap style entirely his own to a sultry croon just to the left of Al Green, Cee-Lo layers incredibly original poetry over mesmerizing beats of all strains. Formerly a member of Atlanta’s grossly under-appreciated Goodie Mob, Cee-Lo revealed the depth of his talent in 2002 with the glorious, complex, and aptly titled CEE-LO GREEN & HIS PERFECT IMPERFECTIONS.CEE-LO GREEN…IS THE SOUL MACHINE retains the wonderful unpredictability of its predecessor, but it finds a stronger sense of focus within such an eclectic range. He opens Gil Scott-Heronesque “Sometimes” with the easy observation “ya know, sometimes I wanna rap, sometimes I wanna sing,” a Zen-like reflection that sums up Cee-Lo’s intriguing contradictions. On other tracks, he can cruise along in a Sly & the Family Stone style on “My Kind of People” or flow on the socially conscious yet Dirty South-like “Scrap Metal” or even rail against the music industry on the country-tinged “Die Trying.” Cee-Lo’s brain clearly races along from idea to idea at speeds well exceeding normal limits, but he has found a way to rein it in for a fantastic, prismatic album–at one angle an avant-garde experiment, and at another a funky pop record.

Machine Girl -

Machine Girl -

A teenage girl shows the mob who’s boss in this over-the-top blend of action, horror, and comedy. Ami (Minase Yashiro) is a seemingly ordinary Japanese schoolgirl who refuses to turn a blind eye when thugs at her school subject her little brother to needless cruelty. Ami retaliates against the vicious kids and their folks, which turns out to be a dangerous decision when she discovers some of them are connected to local gangsters. Ami is kidnapped by strong-arm men whose intimidation tactics include cutting off one of her arms, but Ami refuses to let the criminals go unpunished. With the help of a mechanic sympathetic to her cause, Ami’s arm is replaced with a high-caliber machine gun, and she is transformed into a single-minded killing machine in a school uniform. Kataude mashin garu (aka The Machine Girl) also stars Asami Kentaro Shimazu and Taro Suwa. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Yeah Yeah Yeahs: Karen O (vocals); Nick Zinner (guitar); Brian Chase (drums).Producers: David Andrew Sitek, Yeah Yeah Yeahs.A quickie to tide fans over until the 2003 release of their full-length debut, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ Machine is appropriately economical and efficient — once again, the trio manages to cram more ideas and attitude into a few songs than most bands do in a full-length release. If possible, this three-track single is even more impressive than Yeah Yeah Yeahs, demonstrating both their ever-expanding range and their increasingly focused style. In the Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ case, however, “focused” doesn’t mean tamer — if anything, “Machine” is even more ferocious and unhinged than the songs on their first EP, a complex and somewhat cryptic mix of anger and desperate lust that recalls the scary sexiness that PJ Harvey displayed on Rid of Me and 4-Track Demos. Nicolas Zinner’s guitars and Brian Chase’s drumming are still simple and streamlined, but display a new level of sophistication, while Karen O’s snarling vocals span smooth, high notes and choppy growls. “Graveyard” adds a dash of shockabilly to this rougher, tougher sound, but the real deal is “Pin (Remix),” the most remarkable song of their young career, musically speaking: a spooky but beautiful mix of dreamy vocals synths and guitars looped and layered over a minimal beat, it’s a ghostly expression of their punk attitude that rivals Sonic Youth’s “Shadow of a Doubt” in its eerie loveliness. Like Yeah Yeah Yeahs, within Machine are traces of the sounds of lots of great underground groups — bits of Siouxsie & the Banshees and Royal Trux, as well as Sonic Youth and PJ Harvey, can be heard in the fray this time — without specifically aping them. As if it was necessary, Machine offers more proof that the Yeah Yeah Yeahs are very much in the lineage of New York’s classic art punk groups, able to define as well as transcend the musical fashions of the moment. ~ Heather Phares

As Kurt Vonnegut once put it, “We are what we pretend to be, so we must be very careful with what we pretend to be.” A light variation on this theme is presented in the mock-documentary The Love Machine, in which a filmmaker (played by Marlene Forte) examines several Internet sex sites, and then pays a visit to the people behind the electronic facades. As it turns out, the flesh-and-blood people don’t bear a great deal of resemblance to their on-line images or personalities. Gordon Ericksen’s satire received its premier at the 1999 Los Angeles Independent Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Lest you believe Little Dragon lack an aesthetic spine, their shift away from low-key left-field hip-hop, plaintive piano ballads, and acoustic jazz–a combination that helped make their debut a cult classic–seems more natural after a couple spins. There’s no way around the fact that most of MACHINE DREAMS is icy electro-pop, but it is not as if the truly singular Yukimi Nagano, an enamoring vocalist, has switched to drone mode, forsaking her grounding in R&B. She has kind of perked up, in fact, with her hooks carrying more lift to suit her band’s rubbery rhythms and liquid synthesizer patterns. Just as “Twice” was the standout on LITTLE DRAGON, the songs here that resonate most–the opening “A New” and closing “Fortune”–are the quietest, both lyrically vague yet bursting with feeling.

Difficult as it may be to consider Stand Before the Firing Squad’s Noise Machine deserving of an “album” qualification when its ten tracks last just over 22 minutes, the sheer compositional breadth and instrumental complexity contained herein easily exceeds what most bands can muster in entire careers. Perhaps far more than most bands would want to muster, actually, given the eclectic but often chaotic results that will undoubtedly polarize listeners into separate camps torn between “so wacked its brilliant” and “so wacked, I don’t get it” conclusions. Curiously, the most frequent examples of conventional — or at least coherent — songwriting on hand encompass smooth lounge jazz numbers like “Light ‘em Up and Knock ‘em Back,” “13th Song,” most of “The Shadow Whisperer,” and numerous portions of songs in-between. Otherwise, it’s spastic, post-rock grindcore and mathcore workouts that prevail, with the group continually peppering any given song with unexpected (some might say unnecessary) extra seasoning, for example: funk riffs and pseudo raps (“When Long Days Run into Late Nights”); ambient safari sound-tracking (“Upside Down in a Snow Covered Bank”); underwater reggae (“Eloi, Eloi”); and so on and so on. In light of all this, at least Noise Machine’s Dali-esque cover image starts to make perfect sense — even if the music itself may not. A brave experiment nonetheless, this trying sonic adventure isn’t recommended to just any musical tourist, but rather the fearless explorers of its as yet unmapped outer fringes. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia

The classic science fiction novel by H.G. Wells becomes this big-budget adventure directed by the author’s great-grandson Simon Wells. Guy Pearce stars as Alexander Hartdegen, a scientist, professor, and inventor in 1895 New York City who believes that time travel is possible. The sudden and unexpected death of his fianc?e spurs Alexander to build a time machine, which he hopes to use in an effort to change the past. When he is unable to change the past, Alexander hurls himself more than 800,000 years into the future, seeking answers about the nature of time, but instead encountering a dystopian world where humanity has divided up into two races, the peaceful Eloi and the subterranean Morlocks. Befriending the beautiful Eloi woman Mara (pop singer Samantha Mumba), Alexander must set out to save her from the underground world of the Morlocks when she is captured by them. Along the way, he is aided by Vox (Orlando Jones), a bio-mechanical being from the 21st century. Ultimately, Alexander makes a shocking discovery about the true nature of the Eloi and Morlocks and decides that the only way to change the future is to alter the present. Due to exhaustion, director Wells was briefly replaced during the last few weeks of production by Gore Verbinski, director of The Mexican (2001). The Time Machine co-stars Jeremy Irons and Mark Addy. ~ Karl Williams, Rovi
