The Monster – Fullscreen B&W $24.99 It’s hard to tell at times whether director Roland West was aiming for laughs or thrills in The Monster, but this ambivalence is all part of the fun. Hallam Cooley and Johnny Arthur, two dumb clerks in Gertrude Olmstead’s small-town general store, try to impress Olmstead by joining the sheriff’s investigation of a rash of disappearances. The two heroes and heroine discover that a local lunatic asylum has been taken over by mad scientist Lon Chaney, who lures victims into his lair by arranging automobile accidents (it’s the old mirror-on-the-highway trick again). Chaney straps poor Olmstead to the operating table, preparing to transform her “immortal soul” to the body of one of his monstrous creations, but Coolley and Arthur come to her rescue. The Monster was based on a play by Crane Wilbur, with a dash of Poe’s “Dr. Tarr and Professor Fether” tossed in. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi |

Okie Noodling – Fullscreen $5.99 Fishing enthusiasts will spend hours debating the virtues of different rods, reels, lures, and types of bait, but there is a small but hardy group of anglers who have figured out a way to get by without any gear at all. This documentary takes a look at the phenomenon of “noodling,” in which a fisherman literally takes a deep breath, ducks under the water, and snatches a fish with his bare hands. Needless to say, it’s not a method that works for everyone, and a few noodlers have discovered the hard way that what they thought was a fish turned out to be a snapping turtle or a beaver (which fend off sportsmen by biting back), but the sport has attracted a handful of ardent supporters, and director Bradley Beesley features interviews with several of them, as well as offering footage of a number of veteran noodlers in action. Okie Noodling also features an original musical score by the noted alternative rock band the Flaming Lips. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi |

Daughter of Darkness – Fullscreen B&W $14.99 Daughter of Darkness was based on They Walk Alone, a play by Max Catto. The heroine of the play can be described as a “homicidal nymphomaniac,” which understandably posed censorship problems when the Catto original was adapted to the screen. In her second film, Irish stage star Siobhan McKenna plays Emma Baudine, a “black widow” who lures men with her sexual charms and then murders them. Because she is the trusted assistant of village priest Father Corcoran (Liam Redmond), no one suspects what Emma is up to — no one, that is, except the inquisitive Bess Stanforth (Anne Crawford), who emerges as the heroine of the piece. Also appearing in her first movie role is Honor Blackman, long before her international TV fame vis-a-vis The Avengers. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi |

The Velvet Vampire – AC3 Dolby $8.99 Diane (Celeste Yarnall), glamorous and wealthy denizen of nightclubs, lusted after by men and women, is a vampire. With the aid of dark glasses and wide-brimmed hats, she can venture out even in the daytime. She drains a horde of victims, including a biker, a mechanic and the mechanic’s girlfriend, before she lures Lee (Michael Blodgett) and his wife Susan (Sherry Miles) to her mansion in the desert. Lee, who at first succumbs to her charms, panics when he finds the servant drained of blood, and tries to persuade Susan to leave with him. She is under the vampire’s spell at the time, though, and refuses to leave. When Susan finds her husband’s dry corpse, however, she does try to escape. ~ Clarke Fountain, Rovi |

The Tooth Fairy – Widescreen AC3 Dolby $8.99 As maestro TV producer Stephen J. Cannell’s latest foray into feature work, The Tooth Fairy represents the latest direct-to-video entry in an unofficial series of slasher films that resurrect friendly characters in a horrific vein — from the 1997 Jack Frost to the 2005 Gingerdead Man. This particular outing begins with the legend of a woman known as “The Tooth Fairy,” who lures unsuspecting children to her home with promises of gifts in exchange for their lost teeth, and then butchers them. The film implies, at its outset, that the homicidal slayer is long gone — and that her home is being converted to a cozy bed and breakfast. Everyone believes the story — until a young girl and her mother check into the inn. The child happens to be on the verge of losing a tooth, and all hell breaks loose. Chuck Bowman (A Kiss So Deadly) directs, from a teleplay co-authored by Cannell and Corey Strode. ~ Nathan Southern, Rovi |

The Pied Piper of Hamelin - $5.99 The Pied Piper of Hamelin was originally filmed as a television special, then released theatrically outside the United States. The story is the familiar one: the town of Hamelin, plagued by rats, hires a mysterious piper (Van Johnson) to rid the town of rodents. The piper does so, on the promise that he’ll be paid a handsome fee. But the duplicitous burgomeister (Claude Rains), on the advice of his Laurel-and-Hardy council (Doodles Weaver and Stanley Adams), reneges on his promise. In revenge, the piper lures all of Hamelin’s children off to parts unknown. In a departure from the original, there’s a happy ending this time. Most of the dialogue is spoken in rhyme (quite amusingly by Rains), while the songs are adaptations of Edvard Grieg tunes. In the musical department, Kay Starr comes off best as the grieving mother of one of the missing kids. Because it was filmed in color, The Pied Piper of Hamelin has remained in TV syndication into the 1990s. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi |

Trilby – B&W $5.99 Produced entirely at the World Film Company’s studios in Fort Lee, NJ, and on location in Greenwich Village’s MacDougal Alley, this faithful rendition of George du Maurier’s tale of mesmerism stars Clara Kimball Young in the title role and stage actor Wilton Lackaye as the monstrous Svengali. The latter, a depraved hypnotist, lures the na?ve Trilby to his lair and hypnotizes her into writing a farewell letter to her boyfriend, the artist Little Billy (Chester Barnett). But when despite his best efforts he cannot force the girl’s affection, Svengali instead turns her into an opera star, hypnotizing the girl before every performance. Trilby was remade in 1931 starring John Barrymore and Marian Marsh, by many considered the definitive version. ~ Hans J. Wollstein, Rovi |

Algiers – B&W $5.99 This Hollywood remake of the French Pepe le Moko adheres so slavishly to its source that it utilizes stock footage from the original film, and even picked its actors on the basis of their resemblance to the French cast. Contrary to legend, star Charles Boyer never says “Come wizz me to zee Casbah”; as master criminal Pepe le Moko, he’s already in the Casbah, a crook-controlled safe harbor which protects Pepe from the French authorities. Pepe’s friendly enemy, police inspector Joseph Calleia, treats his pursuit of Pepe like a chess game, patiently waiting for his opponent to make that one wrong move. The ever-careful Pepe has the misfortune to fall hopelessly in love with tourist Hedy Lamarr (in her first American film). A combination of events, including the betrayal of Pepe by his castaway lover Sigrid Gurie and Hedy’s tearful return to her ship when she is misinformed that Pepe is killed, lures the hero/villain into the open. Arrested by Calleia, Pepe begs for one last glance at his departing sweetheart. At this point in the French version, Pepe cheated the hangman by killing himself; this would never do in Production Code-dominated Hollywood, so Algiers contrives to have Pepe shot while trying to escape. Algiers was remade in 1948 as a musical, Casbah, starring Tony Martin. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi |

El Mariachi is living quietly in hiding after the death of the woman he loved, Carolina (Salma Hayek), but Sands lures him back into action through the promise of a final showdown with his nemesis Marquez, forcing El Mariachi to retrieve his guitar case (containing a mighty arsenal) and once again do battle against the lawless. Robert Rodriguez not only directed Once Upon a Time in Mexico, but he wrote the screenplay, handled the camera work, edited the film, and composed the musical score. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi |

Birdman of Alcatraz/Elmer Gantry - $5.99 Includes:Elmer Gantry (1960) Birdman of Alcatraz (1962) Elmer Gantry Elmer Gantry (Burt Lancaster), a drunken, dishonest street preacher allegedly patterned on Billy Sunday, wrangles a job with the travelling tent ministry conducted by Sister Sharon Falconer (Jean Simmons). Thanks to Gantry’s enthusiastic hellfire-and-brimstone sermons, Sister Sharon’s operation rises to fame and fortune, enough so that Sharon realizes her dream of building her own enormous tabernacle. These ambitions are put in jeopardy when a prostitute (Oscar-winning Shirley Jones), a former minister’s daughter who’d been deflowered by Gantry years earlier, lures Gantry into a compromising situation and has photographs taken. It took several years for any Hollywood studio to take a chance with Sinclair Lewis’ novel, and when it finally did arrive on the screen, producer/director Richard Brooks was compelled to downplay some of the more “sacrilegious” passages in the original. Also appearing in Elmer Gantry are Arthur Kennedy as an H.L. Mencken-style atheistic journalist, and Edward Andrews as George Babbitt, a character borrowed from another Sinclair Lewis novel. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi Birdman of Alcatraz In this film based on a true story, Burt Lancaster plays Robert Stroud, a withdrawn prison inmate who cures a sick bird that flies into his cell and eventually becomes a world-renowned ornithologist — all while serving a life sentence. An overbearing warden (Karl Malden) eventually transfers Stroud to the notoriously brutal prison on Alcatraz, but he is able to continue his research, abort a riot, start a romance, and eventually get his story out through a determined reporter (Edmond O’Brien). Directed with his usual solid craftsmanship by John Frankenheimer, Birdman Of Alcatraz tells a quietly moving tale for which Lancaster, Telly Savalas (as one of Stroud’s fellow inmates), and Thelma Ritter (as Stroud’s mother) all received Oscar nominations. ~ Don Kaye, Rovi |

Fingersmith - $24.99 Two women from different worlds are brought together by strange circumstances and forbidden desires in this period-drama. Sue Trinder (Sally Hawkins) was left on her own as a young child when her parents died, and she was forced to fend for herself, living on the street in the company of thieves and confidence men. Sue is given a chance to reform when she’s taken in by Mrs. Sucksby (Imelda Staunton), who wants to keep her off the streets, but Sucksby’s friend Richard Rivers (Rupert Evans) is familiar with Sue’s old circle and lures her into an elaborate criminal scheme. Sue is to get a job as a maid to Maud Lilly (Elaine Cassidy), a young woman who lives with her uncle (Charles Dance) and will claim a large family inheritance when she marries. Sue’s role is to act as confidante to Maud, so when Richard attempts to court her, Sue will help convince the young heiress that marrying Richard is the right thing to do. Richard’s scheme is to marry Maud, have her sanity called into question, and then take possession of her fortune after she’s committed to an asylum, but as Sue becomes close friends with Maud, she begins to wonder if she has the nerve to go through with the plan, especially when her feelings for Maud begin to extend beyond just friendship. As Sue’s choice becomes nearly unbearable, fate steps in and she discovers all is not as she’d been led to believe. Sudden Fear - $24.99 Joan Crawford stars as wealthy San Francisco heiress Myra Hudson, a successful playwright who meets Lester Blaine (Jack Palance) while casting her new play in New York. They meet again on the train ride back, fall in love and marry. Unknown to Myra, Lester is seeing mistress Irene Neves (Gloria Grahame), whom he still loves and has married only for her money. While looking through her study, Irene and Lester learn that Myra has made a will leaving only $10,000 a year to Lester (though if he remarries following her death he receives nothing). Seeing that the will has not yet taken effect, they plot to kill Myra without noticing that Myra’s dictating machine is on and recording their conversation. After listening to the conversation and spending a sleepless night, Myra goes to Irene’s apartment and steals a gun. Irene then lures Lester to the apartment, intending to kill him. Losing her nerve, she flees the apartment with Lester chasing her. The film has an exciting and surprising climax as all meet unexpectedly during the chase. Joan Crawford gives a fine, if melodramatic performance, and Jack Palance is amazingly effective playing against type as a leading man. Despite a slow start, this is a fine suspense thriller that earned Oscar nominations for Joan Crawford and Jack Palance and a nomination for Charles B. Lang Jr. for his striking black and white photography. ~ Linda Rasmussen, Rovi |
