The next big thing
It was night, and behind us atrium illuminated 18-story glass and steel bright as the giant moon. It was July 3 and my old college friend John and I was about to join a group of sailors Occoquan, VA, at the end of a pier of the port to see the National Marina Hotel and Convention Center Gaylord first fireworks show in July. But first I wanted to take some pictures. As usual. John uses his camera under water, she had prepared for our journey by the Potomac River because he was not sure if this kind of veil involve as many failover and is wetting the Sunfish sailing in college had the last Once that had been in a sailboat together. Got it. We have a lot of tip.
But John did not understand. I do not want not in the transition. She got now. No, she did not understand was the idea of National Harbor, where he had difficulty Put in perspective, even though we now had here since late June
"I mean it's cool in a crazy alternate universe of passage, but still do not understand. What really is and why you're here?"
Main problems in fact. How do you explain?
We were standing on the platform that John turned away from the river to take pictures of thousands of spectators who had gathered along the coast in anticipation of the National Port fireworks. Finally, he stopped and took a brochure from his pocket and began reading beyond its facts and figures. "National Harbor is built on 300 acres, including six hotels and apartment buildings about 20" he said. "When finished, has 7.3 million square feet of mixed-use community, 4,000 hotel rooms, 2,500 housing units, 500,000 square feet of office space A class (whatever whatever), 1 million square feet of shops, restaurants and entertainment spaces and 10,000 parking spaces. "
"Yes," I said, it will be larger than the Mall of America, the center of the largest mall in the world. "
"Therefore, it is supposed to be a giant shopping center?"
"Uh, I do not think so."
We walked slowly towards the end of the pier, porch lights on the moon changes from white to red.
"I think that is supposed to be a kind of multiple use, where you can spend your holiday together or use it as a base to visit Washington, DC, which is a kind of super-stations. Or sidetrips in Alexandria or Mount Vernon boat. In At least I think that's the idea. "I tried a bit of history. National Harbor developer Milton Peterson was not the first thinking that this old gravel pit Smoots Bay in the shadow of the Woodrow Wilson Bridge and Beltway would be the perfect place for something really big. In the 1970s and 1980s there were several projects important for the property that ultimately failed. One was called the Bay of Americas and PortAmerica other. "This is great sounding too, like National Harbor," I said. "But this is what came through, not that he was not an act of Congress." (In 1999, Congress passed a law exempting the federal National Harbor verification and the environment protected from lawsuits if there is no reason to believe that any trial had taken place.)
We welcomed our Occoquan-new friends he had met earlier in the day that they had placed in its fourth weekend event in July at National Harbor, and looked fires City Alexandria artificial arch in silence in the dark sky through the jet stream. I reminded John that the boulevards lined with trees and with special responsibility public art works, hotels, restaurants, shops, taxis, tour boats, of letters in, artwork, a kiosk and to guess, were designed to provide visitor plenty to see and do. "There are some things more and are slightly larger than we are accustomed, at least here. Hey, you live in Orlando, must be used This sort of thing. "
"This is a moment," he admitted.
"Take these people Occoquan," I continued. "They either understood. "I had said earlier they had made the trip to National Harbor for four or five times." You can get in their boats and spend an hour or two to go up, pull his pants, pulls out their chairs and relax them. BBQ, shop, listen to a calypso band, walk your dog and go to sleep soundly in her own bed. When the order week, pulling their docklines and go home. "
"We used to anchor in the river for the fireworks," offered Alan Gross, who sat on the edge of the group with his German shepherd Schatzi and had heard our conversation. "But then we had to return to Occoquan in the dark with all this traffic. It was crazy! It is much better! "
The firing of rockets for the first time in the air a barge in the river and burst into a shower of color overhead. Behind us, the atrium Gaylord changed from red to blue.
Jean and I had arrived at the National Harbor, in a ray of sunshine in the afternoon Saturday at the end of June on board Snippe, my Albin Vega 27. After a week of Potomac zigzag lazily against a persistent wind (are there others?), Finally relaxed Snippe the main channel and Potomac National Harbor Marina. We were happy to do.
We had spent the previous night at Smallwood State Park Mattawoman Creek, where we ran smack into a hornet's nest in mid-tournament men bottom fishing with steely eyes and teeth and three head things for bass, and quickly grab a great capture. They had no patience for yachts. We, however, just wanted to let Creek and control in the marina. The problem is that we have become what taken not to run aground in the narrow channel in the park that have fallen into the clutches of the many-headed hydra of marine vegetation just below the surface. We took quickly. If there was no heroic action with a hook, an oar and a Swiss Army multi-tool, feel that they've swallowed soon to join other unfortunate lost. A Once released, attached as an advance over the phone, and then was gone because we could not reach the office of the pier. (There was a closed door at the end of the pier.) We have been near the office where we were assigned a slip in which it could not dock because it was shallow enough to land a bass boat. We have chosen a more empty and brought him back. This leaflet was naturally belong to the Seatow Guy, re-anchored and re-re-reduced by a sailboat sank in the dock. This was not a night of inspiration.
The stretch of the Potomac above Mattawoman is full of things to see. First is the entrance off Occoquan Bay on Virginia's side, beautiful Mason Neck Wildlife Refuge on the north shore of the bay, and then for a good long thought George Mason Gunston Manor, on a cliff overlooking down in Gunston Cove and the Potomac. The river narrows here for their size, and the chain moves restlessly from one bank to another.
Soon we had our first view of Mount Vernon, the most familiar of American households, as we crowded the canal to take a boat trip three stories tall with a broad scope for channel as busy Mount Vernon. John was delighted, as may well be, but I stubbornly insisted on paying less attention to the landscape and floating logs and other spots debris that often litter the piece of river. Soon after, Fort Washington dominated us on the coast of Maryland, and finally we could see the Woodrow Wilson Bridge and beyond Washington Monument, a show that never fails to overwhelm.
Between the cliffs and Indian Queen Rose, the canal to the womb the coast of Maryland. Here? Snippe and another was only big tour boat, each of us lives too intimate a moment as markers in red and green, and so close to shore could almost touch the ground red maple. But soon we had to move on to the middle of the river, which is preparing for the trip through the center span of the Woodrow Wilson Bridge. Not that we went to the bridge. But I have to talk about the chain, as it was here by the time you reach the middle of the river and as off South Point-to-National Harbor is that suddenly, without prelude, just there, like Xanadu or the Emerald City. Just to feel good Kublai Khan or Dorothy I'm not sure. Anyway, straight out of a fairy tale.
"My God," said John of the bow, "What is it?
"National Harbor is, of course, silly." "And what we are particularly mourn again, without doubt, is the Gaylord Hotel and Convention Center, which is three times the size of everything else. "I had been to National Harbor with friends spring and therefore could be annoying blasé about the whole thing. But in reality, we can not deny that it is a stunner.
A moment later, however, more had caught his attention. "Look at that huge sail!"
"You speak, of course, the mainsail eight-storey semi-transparent glass that adorns the top of the port side opposite the Westin Hotel.
She looked dark and abandoned by the twins of his camera. Click OK.
"John", I called ahead, "What is our next score?" OK. Click OK.
"Shhhh," he I said (or words to that effect), "find the next marker!"
I sympathized with John's desire to take pictures because the focus of the National Harbor water is no doubt in the unpaved road for a breathtaking view. But Smoots Bay is shallow and our maps, but new and not, are not new enough to show the entry of new markers marina. And suddenly, we have also seen us rolling in the wake of a large number of motorboats large. Did I mention it was a Saturday afternoon? Click OK. Click OK.
"John, stop it!"
She sighed and put the camera away, and then scanned Bay. "It … Red said, pointing to a marker near South Point.
I made a sharp turn to starboard and immediately asked the following marker turned out to be two markers, one red and one green, a little further. Continue following the signs as they skirted the coast to the outer harbor, which is also the fuel pier. He began looking for our assigned slip: B17. A series about the change because it was almost large enough to hold a B-17 bomber. I have also estimated that about eight of my Albin Vega 27, where two deep pond. Not that we are a bit of space could not be space more comfortable win, I mean that National Harbor is just the kind of place where you have to keep adjusting your sense of proportion.
Click OK. Click OK. Juan was again. But this time I do not care, because we were committed to our newsletter and had already been received by revelers environment on the boat next to ours. So I left and went to Eric Bradley harbormaster. I found in his office / kiosk on the quay outside, deftly plays with a complete fuel-ups and the prize for research vessels berthing few hours or overnight parking. A small battalion of servants moved Wharf efficiently among A, B and C docks, making a steady flow faster arrival of ships.
"Wait until the fourth weekend in July!? Bradley said that when I realized on congestion. "We will be completely full, and we hope that the three yachts of more than a hundred meters on the north side of the pier principal. "
Before coming to Washington to open the National Marina, Bradley was Dockmaster landing in Annapolis on Back Creek in Annapolis. "It's a different ship game, "he said." [in Annapolis] were mainly transient and sailing up and down the east coast. Here, we have large vessels engine, primarily, most of which never go to the southern U.S. 301 bridges. They are right happy here. "
Much of the marine works to slipholders years, had a 60 percent occupancy by mid-summer, but a generous number of slips are set aside for transient boaters, both nights and hours. "We are increasingly navigation and marinas remain click here." Particular groups plan their events around special programs provided by the National Harbor almost every weekend, including tastings and beef and a foam Festival, or seasonal events like the Oktoberfest and the repetition of Market Christmas, that is, the weekend of Thanksgiving until Christmas.
"I thought it would be a great place to come for Christmas, I said." Is remains open throughout the winter? "
"We took the ships at Pier C in winter, because we have a lot of ice pushed against the river, but keep the port open all year. "Eric explained that there is a breakwater in Dock C to protect springs in at least some of the wind chop that accumulates in water exposed to the Smoots Bay, especially during the winter.
At this point in our conversation, three vessels idling at the dock, waiting In turn, I went back to Pier B, idly wondering if John had ceased to be the device's battery yet. Click OK. Probably not.
"Shower" was all he said. I held the key to electronic facilities slipholders and smiled. We dived into the cabin for a couple of towels reasonably clean dry clothes and fairly and went looking for the showers.
"Whoa, what is?" John suddenly stopped and looked at a Little Beach, just to the left the main pier, where a giant figure, legs and hands chopped dramatically in the sand. Above, below and around parts Volkswagen body size, anxiety scores of children with scrambled eggs, along with dozens of relatives took pictures with the same enthusiasm. Click OK. John also.
"It's The Awakening ", I said, trying not to sound too boring." For twenty years he was at Hains Point is across the Woodrow Wilson Bridge in the center of Potomac and virtually infinite number of people came to see him. "I vaguely in the direction of Washington and East Potomac Park, five miles upriver." But someone in its wisdom, decided that he disagreed with the image of the park, has been released, and Petersen, National Harbor developer, bought and built a track to outside. "
John When I finally got back on track, we passed by a court, it seems if doubled as a small stage, and turned right at the first street we came, National Plaza. There, just across the street from the Westin Hotel and next to Olympia News, was the entry of the Navy Office port captain and toilets, laundry and showers. Showers!
When I came out a little later, I met John and Betty Lockard Arlington, Virginia, which maintain Irish Ayes boats in the marina. The Lockard had their final album in May and June vessel "We love it!" was enthusiastic. "The only problem is that we have to remember to make a reservation at a restaurant if we eat when we are here on the weekend. "
Hmm, good thought. As we said goodbye, took my cell phone.
All clean, it's time to explore all the American pie Oz. The first thing we did was head of the Staircase Spanish.
"Spanish steps? Jean asked.
"Yes, the Spanish, I replied. "Probably because they lead the American Way, National Harbor, Main Street, that went fast because I could see this made no sense, "is based on a main shopping street in Barcelona called Las Ramblas, which apparently fell in love with Petersen and therefore wanted to copy here. So I continued, "like many cities in southern Europe that a boulevard, in the shade of a canopy of banana. This makes it a cool, shady refuge in the hot summer sun bright and warm in winter, when trees have traditionally been reduced almost to heel.
"I know, I've seen a lot of European boulevards, said a little coldly," I grew up in France, remember. "
"Oh, yes."
"And the Spanish are in Rome, not Spain."
"Oh, yes."
Fortunately, at that time we had reached the steps, which are flanked by two large square tiles on the walls on each side. Both mosaics of Washington, Cheryl Foster DC native and represent Maryland, especially those who have made a living in the water.
At the top of the stairs is a roundabout. "A place has a point of view, I repeated. This is a great observation deck overlooking the beach with the giant awake, and beyond the marina, the Potomac, and finally Alexandria on the opposite bank. A "view" a standard. But John was not admiring the view. His head was down and meanders this way and that in the post observation, Maryland to study artist Steven Weitzman square feet 1600 map that depicts the history of American debut of the Chesapeake Bay. The work, in Chesapeake Travel Fotera is made of a concrete structure such as terrazzo, as Weitzman developed for public art.
"Stop it," said finally, "Let's go shopping!
And we did, wandering from one side of each street a half dozen National Harbor, then another, sometimes court of the streets pedestrian crossings little tricky. On the Waterfront Street, which swept through art and fossils Whine. The National Plaza, take samples of ice cream Aromi Italy. And the way Americans travel surprise and Govinda Gallery, and won a Mayorga Coffee Roasters espresso and continued up the street to the shops, restaurants, hotels and buildings of the posters have to come home and the dog walking area fenced. We look with optimism to the newsstand guess, but it was empty. I guess I did not know we had. The plane had a couple of years to go before a drink on the street, but the center is already full of various agreements Boulevard of stones brought New England and the shape and polished at times. The effect is a bit like ancient sources in southern Europe, often anchor their old main streets.
Before our hike to the American way over, we passed the site of the future home of the National Children's Museum. This 150,000 square foot, Cesar Pelli designed the building is scheduled to open in 2013. It is within walking distance another project: a Disney hotel. Just before our arrival at National Harbor, Disney announced it had bought a plot 15 acres at the end of the American way, where the company plans to build a resort hotel with 300 rooms on a date yet to be named.
Oh, yes, all this and we never even get to the hotel and convention center Gaylord. We did, and spent a few lazy hours surprised what you can do with 2,000 rooms and almost half a million square feet of convention space. We learned that you could theoretically use the conference room 800 feet long to store all the Washington Monument, if laid on its side. And we were able to answer the question: What can be done with a cavernous 18-story atrium? Apart from the obvious answer is enjoy the view, you can actually build a small colonial town chockablock with shops and restaurants, including a sports bar with video wall of 30 meters height. You are also a small stream across the yard and gardens at the front of the building. And you can build fountains that shoot 65 meters in the air and dance to the music 7 to 10 pm each night.
Ugh! Thank God, it was time for dinner. John and I was able to summon enough energy to make our way out of the atrium and gardens. Then we walked along the Harborwalk and back in the "city." We found Rosa Mexicano Restaurant Sea Street, and fortunately it sank in the chairs on the terrace overlooking the marina. We have seen Snippe, who looked a little lost in his huge sheet, surrounded by a phalanx of motor boats to big boy style.
Several cold beers, a couple of plates of tortilla soup and mole later, zombie-the return of the boat and fell into our bunks. But not before John had just taken a few photos National Harbor at night, viewed from the front of a small sailboat over-B17. It was a beautiful sight. . . and very large. . . and maybe a little strange.
"Maybe tomorrow drop everything in perspective."
"Of course. Good night, John. "
