Deep Sea 3D - $19.99 The beauty and mystery of life beneath the surface of the ocean is brought to the screen in this documentary, shot in 3-D and exhibited in the high-definition IMAX film format. Shot in the ocean depths off the coasts of Baja, the Caribbean, and North Carolina, Deep Sea depicts the complexity of the underwater ecosystem, as some sea creatures live in cooperation while others feed upon weaker species to survive. Filmmaker Howard Hall also focuses on the splendor of this world rarely seen by human eyes, photographing a number of rare species of fish, squids, manta rays, jellyfish, and other aquatic creatures, as well as offering a perspective on the environmental dangers that threaten the underwater community. Deep Sea Blues - $14.99 When most music fans think about seeing a blues show, they imagine a smoke-filled nightclub in a rough neighborhood, not a luxurious ocean liner sailing to the Caribbean or vacation spots in the Pacific. But since 1992, Roger Naber has been booking and producing “the Legendary Rhythm & Blues Cruise,” a series of vacation packages in which blues fans can enjoy an ocean voyage along with live entertainment from world-renowned blues, R&B and zydeco artists. While offering fine music in a beautiful setting, the “Blues Cruises” have also given artists the opportunity to interact with their fans in a way they can’t when playing clubs or theaters (comparing notes and sometimes jamming with them after hours), and allows listeners to get to know one another, striking up friendships among like-minded listeners. Documentary filmmaker Robert Mugge, well known for his cinematic portraits of respected musicians, offers fans a look at the “Blues Cruise” phenomenon with the movie Deep Sea Blues, which chronicles a 2006 cruise featuring performances from Bobby Rush, Taj Mahal, the Fabulous Thunderbirds, Otis Clay, Lil’ Ed and the Blues Imperials, Buckwheat Zydeco, Tab Benoit,Watermelon Slim and many more. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi |

Deep Blue Sea – Widescreen $4.99 Although mako sharks are among the fastest and deadliest predators in the ocean, they’re not as smart as humans — at least, they weren’t. However, Dr. Susan McAlester (Saffron Burrows) has been using mako sharks as her test subjects for research on the regeneration of human brain tissues. McAlester has altered the DNA of several sharks, raising them close to the level of human intelligence; the sharks have also become faster and stronger in the process. While these DNA experiments have yielded fascinating results, they’re also of questionable ethics and legality, earning her the distrust of several members of her crew, including shark authority Carter Blake (Thomas Jane and cook “Preacher” Dudley (LL Cool J). The financial backers of these experiments have also expressed skepticism, so when McAlester is ready to perform some major tests, financier Russell Franklin (Samuel L. Jackson) arrives for the occasion. McAlester and her team are delicately extracting brain tissue from one of the altered makos when the animal regains consciousness – and becomes very angry. The shark not only attacks the researchers but also damages the floating lab, leaving the crew aboard a literally sinking ship, with the makos eager to go a few rounds – in an arena that favors sharks. Deep Blue Sea was directed by Renny Harlin, and filmed in Mexico at Fox Studios Baja in the underwater filming facilities created for James Cameron’s Titanic. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi |

Volcanoes of the Deep Sea – Fullscreen Dolby Dts $8.99 Canadian documentary filmmaker Stephen Low directs the IMAX movie Volcanoes of the Deep Sea, with Titanic director James Cameron as the executive producer. During its brief 40-minute running time, the film starts out with a 1977 expedition to find life at the bottom of the sea. At depths as low as 10,000 feet, the discovery proved the existence of underwater volcanoes and the plant life they help sustain. Using the deep-sea diving vehicle known as Alvin, the filmmakers capture large-format film footage of some of these underwater ecosystems along with some helpful CGI reconstructions. Ed Harris delivers the narration. ~ Andrea LeVasseur, Rovi |

Aliens of the Deep - $12.99 Few who witnessed the awesome spectacle of the Titanic emerging from the darkness of the ocean depths in James Cameron’s Ghosts of the Abyss are likely to forget that spectacular sight, and now the groundbreaking filmmaker journeys even deeper into unexplored territory with this look at some of nature’s most elusive creations in Aliens of the Deep. Using the basic concepts of astrobiology as his foundation, Cameron enlists the aid of talented marine biologists and NASA researchers to reveal the fascinating and seldom-seen life forms of the sea and use their biological makeup to create a speculative blueprint for what life on other planets might look like. In the super-heated, mineral-charged water of hydrothermal vents, creatures such as a six-foot-tall worm with crimson plumes dance alongside blind white crabs and some of the strangest creatures you’re ever likely to see. If Ghosts of the Abyss brought viewers as close as they’re ever likely to get to standing on the ocean floor and beholding the majesty of one of history’s most notorious tragedies, Aliens of the Deep brings them as close as they may ever come to standing face-to-face with an alien life form. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi |

Accused of being saboteurs, the time travelers are detained at a high-tech nuclear sea base — where the long-dormant Sea Devils and Silurians are poised to attack, with the aid of a new and deadly ally. Originally telecast January 6, 1984, “Warriors of the Deep, Episode 2″ was written by Johnny Byrne. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi Doctor Who: Warriors of the Deep, Episode 4 In the conclusion of the four-part story “Warriors of the Deep,” the Doctor (Peter Davison) has exposed a scheme hatched by the sea-dwelling Silurians to destroy all mankind, using a 21st century Cold War as their cover and an electrically charged beast called the Myrka as the main instrument of destruction. The Doctor’s only hope rests with several canisters of hexachromite, which is lethal to the Silurians and all similar races — but he is reluctant to unleash so deadly a chemical on the unsuspecting world. Originally telecast January 13, 1984, “Warriors of the Deep, Episode 4″ was written by Johnny Byrne. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi Doctor Who: Warriors of the Deep, Episode 1 Doctor Who’s record-breaking 21st anniversary was launched January 5, 1984, with episode one of the four-part “Warriors of the Deep.” At the height of a 21st century Cold War, the Doctor (Peter Davison) and his companions Tegan (Janet Fielding) and Turlough (Mark Strickson) are accused of being saboteurs. This is a benign threat compared to the one posed by two of the Doctor’s former nemeses — the Sea Devils and the Silurians, last seen on Doctor Who way back in 1972. “Warriors of the Deep, Episode 1″ was written by Johnny Byrne. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi Doctor Who: Warriors of the Deep, Episode 3 In the third episode of the four-part story “Warriors of the Deep,” the Doctor (Peter Davison) and his companions are stranded on a 21st century nuclear sea base, which is about to be besieged by the dreaded Sea Devils and Silurians. This time, the combined villains intend to destroy all mankind with the help of a new henchman: an electrically charged sea beast called the Myrka. Deep Blue Sea – Widescreen Subtitle AC3 Dolby Dts $14.99 Although mako sharks are among the fastest and deadliest predators in the ocean, they’re not as smart as humans — at least, they weren’t.

City Beneath the Sea – Widescreen $24.99 Irwin Allen, praised in some circles as a science fiction genius and damned in others as a shameless schlockmeister, produced and directed this fanciful TV-movie. Set in the 21st century, the film concentrates on a group of colonists dwelling in a modernistic underwater city called Pacifica. The emphasis is on drama rather than special effects, as we see the deep-sea denizens struggling to cope with the pressures of their new existence–and their own personal animosities. Stuart Whitman heads a large cast of TV veterans, including Time Tunnel regulars James Darren, Robert Colbert and Whit Bissell, and onetime Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea star Richard Basehart (as the US President). Expanded from a short “demo” pilot film, City Beneath the Sea is the one Irwin Allen project that could have matured into a truly worthwhile TV series; unfortunately no network was interested in subsidizing this expensive effort. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi |

Under the Sea with Al Giddings - $19.99 Alternately known as a “21st Century Jacques Cousteau” and “The Michelangelo of the Deep,” Al Giddings pioneered the art of deep sea cinematography as an extension of his diving expeditions; he also built a substantial career on the sets of underwater-themed movies, from his role as a camera operator on the 1977 The Deep to his involvement as a co-producer on the 1997 Titanic, and innumerable directorial assignments on made-for-television marine documentaries. With over 30 years of spectacular scuba footage under his belt, Giddings headlining this panoramic overview of his life and career. The program finds Terrel Cass, general manager of Garden City, NY PBS affiliate WLIW, interviewing the diver/cinematographer about his manifold accomplishments, supplemented by Giddings underwater footage. ~ Nathan Southern, Rovi |

Across the Open Sea $14.99 Unleashed kept up their torrid pace of record releases in 1993 with their third outing in two years, Across the Open Sea. Very similar to the previous year’s Shadows in the Deep, both discs were actually re-released in a single package later in the ’90s. The production, while similar, is a little better on Across the Open Sea. Anders Schultz’s drums are especially powerful. Along with the spooky title track, the doom-inflected “In the Northern Lands” stands out as a nice highlight. A trend toward slower tempos begins to develop on this effort, but death metal stalwarts need not worry that the band would ever abandon their musical origins. Plenty of lightning-paced riffs are placed generously throughout this recording, which upholds the group’s death metal reputation nicely. Listeners fond of Unleashed will find no significant fault with Across the Open Seas and are encouraged to locate the combined version if they don’t already own either of these early-’90s Euro death staples. ~ Vincent Jeffries |

Just how great of an effect does global warming have on marine wildlife, and what can be done to ensure the future well-being of our planet? As the filmmakers reveal the delicacy of our fragile ecosystem, viewers are allowed the unique opportunity to see what we risk losing should we fail to address the issue of global climate change sooner rather than later. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi |

Into the Deep: America, Whaling & the World - $24.99 Actor Willem Dafoe (The Last Temptation of Christ) narrates this feature-length documentary examination of America’s 400+-year infatuation with the science and industry of whaling, which originally aired as an episode of PBS’s American Experience series. As written and directed by Ric Burns, the film posits the idea that whaling is as traditionally integrated into “Classic Americana” as virtually anything else. The program approaches its subject chronologically, beginning with a look at whaling’s role in the early 17th century, and tracing the pursuit through mid-19th Century, Civil War-era America, when close to 80% of the whaling ships in the world originated in American ports. The film also touches on issues economic and environmental. Special features include a panoply of deleted scenes that take a closer look at whales, the whaling industry and the history of Nantucket Island, and a wealth of bonus reenactment footage that features sea shanties sung aboard a whaling ship christened The Charles W. Morgan. ~ Nathan Southern, Rovi |

Stewart), who believes that nothing should be done and that the blaze with extinguish itself. As the Seaview races to the coordinates from which Nelson’s plan can be carried out, the admiral must convince the other scientists empanelled by the UN and now aboard the submarine that his plan will work — but someone is killing those scientists and also spreading mutinous dissent among the crew, threatening the survival of the ship before it can even get to the launch point. ~ Bruce Eder, Rovi Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea: The Death Ship While on a test of new equipment — for which only Nelson (Richard Basehart), Crane (David Hedison), and eight scientist-observers are aboard — the Seaview loses all power nearly a mile below the surface. The 10 people aboard are trapped, unable to launch the Flying Sub and too deep to escape using diving gear or the mini-subs, and then they start getting killed off one by one, in what initially look like accidents. It’s clear that one of them is stalking the others, but which one, and to what purpose? In Deep $11.99 Producers: Mick Jones, David Tyson, Walter Afanasieff, Jim Steinman.Engineers include: Steve Gallagher, Tom Banghart, Paul Lani.Tina Arena’s slow-developing international career must be a source of frustration to Sony Music. Given the pop singer/songwriter’s success in her native Australia, where In Deep, her second Epic album, became a number one hit upon its release in August 1997, the obvious plan is to turn her into a down-under Celine Dion. In that pursuit, this American reconfiguration has added “If I Was a River,” written by Diane Warren (who wrote Dion’s “Because You Loved Me”) and produced by Walter Afanasieff, who also produces Dion and Mariah Carey, as well as a duet with Marc Anthony on “I Want to Spend My Lifetime Loving You,” written by James Horner and Will Jennings (who wrote Dion’s “My Heart Will Go On”). The album was produced in typically gargantuan fashion by Jim Steinman, and “Lifetime” was used in the 1998 film The Mask of Zorro. Actually, Arena is not the next Dion, and she doesn’t need this kind of high-powered help. Her own songs, co-written with a team of others, are perfectly good contemporary pop/rock, and she sings them with passionate commitment. The six songs produced by Foreigner’s Mick Jones have a harder rock edge (not surprisingly), notably a cover of Foreigner’s “I Want to Know What Love Is,” but the four produced by David Tyson can rock out, too. Nevertheless, Arena is not distinctive enough a singer or songwriter to break through on her recordings alone. If she wants American success, she will have to work for it. On the one hand, the U.S. market has never been so open to female performers; on the other hand, there’s a glut of them. In Deep is brimming with potential hit singles (it spawned three in Australia), but it had no commercial impact upon release in the U.S., which must be considered a disappointment after the modest American success of her Epic debut, Don’t Ask, in 1996. ~ William Ruhlmann |

The Sea - $19.99 A family reunion staged to welcome an exiled relation turns out to be a study in tension and unpleasant feelings in this family drama. Th?rdur (Gunnar Eyj?lfsson) is the aging owner of a fishing business that has seen better days. Working alongside Th?rdur is his oldest son, Haraldur (Sigurdur Sk?lason), who is convinced the business is doomed unless they upgrade and update their equipment. Haraldur also has to deal with his outspoken wife, ?slaug (Elva ?sk ?lafsd?ttir), who is convinced that both the business and their small Icelandic town are on their last legs. Meanwhile, Th?rdur shares his home with Krist?n (Kristbjorg Kjeld), who went from being his sister-in-law to his second wife; her daughter Mar?a (N?na D?gg Filippusd?ttir); Th?rdur’s daughter, Ragnheidur (Gudr?n G?slad?ttir); her husband Morten (Sven Nordin); and Th?rdur’s often cranky mother, Kata (Herd?s Thorvaldsd?ttir).
