Fabulous Wailers at the Castle/The Wailers… $17.99 Full title: The Fabulous Wailers at the Castle/The Wailers and Co.2 LP’s on 1 CD: AT THE CASTLE (1962)/AND COMPANY (1963).The Wailers includes: Rich Dangel (guitar).Additional personnel includes: Rockin’ Robin Roberts, Kent Morill, Gail Harris (vocals).Containing both of the Wailers’ first two albums on Etiquette (1961′s The Fabulous Wailers at the Castle and 1964′s The Wailers and Co.), this is a good summary of the group’s early-’60s recordings, particularly as it adds half a dozen bonus tracks from 1961-1964 singles. The live At the Castle album is a historically important document of the early-’60s Northwest sound, spotlighting a white band that could play tough rock & roll with a heavy R&B influence. Mixing hard-driving percussion with guitars, sax, and organ, it was divided between instrumentals (including a version of the 1959 hit “Tall Cool One”) and numbers with vocals by Kent Morrill, Rockin’ Robin Roberts (who had sung lead on the Wailers’ 1961 “Louie Louie” single), and young teenage girl Gail Harris. This doesn’t mean, mind you, that the music’s that great. In fact, the songs are too repetitive to hold up as well for record listeners as they must have for dancers at their shows. When Harris takes the mic for covers of Etta James’ “All I Could Do Was Cry” and Ike & Tina Turner’s “I Idolize You,” though, the results are astonishingly fierce, throat-ripping soul for such a young white woman of the era, making one regret she didn’t record more at the time. Released in 1964, The Wailers and Co. was actually a collection of material that had appeared on 1961-1963 singles, fleshed out with some then-recent outtakes. It might have been a pasted-together affair, but musically it was respectable, highlighted by their influential 1961 cover of “Louie Louie” (with Rockin’ Robin Roberts on vocal), the first rock version of the song to bear strong similarity to the arrangement eventually made into a huge hit by fellow Northwesterners the Kingsmen. The rest of it was a real hodgepodge of early-’60s pre-British Invasion styles, from the blatant “Surfin’ USA” rip-off “Partytime USA” and the R&B-girl group dish “Shoo Fly Pie” (the latter with the Marshans on vocals) to the squawking Little Richard imitation “Isabella.” The main item on the menu, though, was the group’s stock-in-trade R&B-rock instrumentals with saxophone and organ, played with tough conviction yet based on too-repetitive, ordinary riffs. Occasionally those instrumentals were more memorable, though, as on “Doin’ the Seaside” and “Frenzy,” both of which have some Booker T. & the MG’s-strength guitar-organ interplay. The bonus cuts largely contain more of the same R&B-based material, both vocal and instrumental, though Gail Harris is heard from again on the 1961 single “Be My Baby” (written by Kent Morrill). The childhood home of England’s Queen Mother, Glamis Castle is reputed to be the most haunted castle in the United Kingdom — despite resembling the Disney castle. Castle Keep – Fullscreen Subtitle Dolby $12.99 This decidedly different war movie follows Maj. Abraham Falconer (Burt Lancaster), a tired, one-eyed Army officer, as he leads eight men into Belgium where they hope to take a much-needed rest at a 10th century castle. The master of the house, Henri Tixier (Jean-Pierre Aumont), welcomes them with a surprising degree of enthusiasm. Tixier is married to his young niece, Therese (Astrid Heeren), and the couple would like to have a child, but since Tixier is impotent, he has been unable to father one. He encourages Falconer to see if he can have better luck with Therese. The men under Falconer’s command have more than a few escapades of their own, as Sgt. Rossi (Peter Falk) seduces the wife of a local baker, an art historian among them tries to protect the treasures of the castle, and a car buff becomes fascinated by his first encounter with a Volkswagen. Amidst the surreal fun and games at the castle, the soldiers make the most of their well-deserved vacation until an invasion of German troops puts them back on the firing line. Castle of Blood – Subtitle $14.99 In this eerie and effective early horror film from prolific genre director Antonio Margheriti, Alan Foster (Georges Riviere), an American tourist visiting England, takes a bet from a Lord Blackwood and his guest, Edgar Allan Poe, to spend the night in a haunted mansion. The rationalist Foster, who does not believe in the supernatural, is soon drawn into a world of ghosts and phantoms, doomed to eternally replay the horrifying murders that climaxed a long-ago love triangle. Foster also finds himself in love with one of the protagonists, the beautiful Elizabeth (Barbara Steele), and it is a love which ensures that he never leaves the haunted castle alive. It’s a marvelously atmospheric gothic thriller, one of the best Italian horror films of the decade, and quite properly made the enchantingly spooky Steele — fresh from Mario Bava’s La Maschera del Demonio — even more of a horror icon. Riccardo Pallotini’s evocative camerawork enhances the mood tremendously, and the shock scenes, though perhaps too tame for modern audiences, are nonetheless strikingly effective. Margheriti remade the film in widescreen color eight years later (as Nella Stretta Morsa del Ragno), but this version remains one of the handful of definitive Italian gothics. Castle of the Walking Dead - $12.99 Just the thing for spooky Halloween-night viewing, this good-looking German film from director Harald Reinl tells the story of the horrible Count Regula (Christopher Lee), who murdered a dozen virgins and drained their blood. For these heinous crimes, he was sentenced to be drawn and quartered. Thirty-five years later, his undead servant resurrects him for revenge and a 13th victim (pretty Karin Dor), whose blood will give Regula eternal life. Lex Barker (a former movie Tarzan) plays the descendant of the man who sentenced Regula to death and has the task of stopping him, aided by Dor’s maid and a highwayman disguised as a monk. Some chilling visuals (a haunted forest with corpses growing out of trees, swarms of vultures in the castle corridors, the obligatory pendulum) and assorted creepy crawlies (pits of snakes, spiders and scorpions) make this a real old-fashioned scare-fest, and it is not too bloody for horror-hungry children. Very loosely based on Edgar Allen Poe’s Pit and the Pendulum, this film delivers on its promise to frighten, although the badly-dubbed U.S. version is to be avoided. ~ Robert Firsching, Rovi |

The daring thief, Lupin, pulls off a heist in a Monte Carlo casino, only to discover the money is counterfeit. He traces the fake bills to the small country of Cagliostro, where the evil Count is generating counterfeit money and distributing it worldwide. Lupin heads to Cagliostro with his partners in crime, a retired gangster, a modern-day samurai, and a beautiful female thief. There, they meet Princess Clarice, who is being forced into a marriage with the Count, and they also find themselves on the trail of a hidden treasure. The character animation is in the classic style of the Lupin III films, but is enhanced by Miyazaki’s love of beautiful, detailed settings, and the storybook kingdom of Cagliostro would be echoed by his later films. Nightmare Castle – Widescreen B&W Subtitle $12.99 Known in U.S. distribution as Nightmare Castle, this eerie Gothic thriller offers two Barbara Steeles for the price of one. Steele first portrays the wife of a deranged scientist (Paul Muller) whose latest experiments involve electro-stimulation of human blood. When the mad doctor discovers his wife is having an affair, he tortures, disfigures and kills her alongside her lover, then removes and preserves the hearts of the victims, using their blood to restore youth and beauty to his own lover. When the madman discovers that his late wife left all her wealth to her mentally unstable sister (Steele again, a blonde this time), he quickly sets about courting and marrying the poor girl, then proceeds to drive her completely mad in order to inherit her fortune. It may be an easier task than he predicted — too easy for comfort, in fact — since the honeymoon is attended by the spectral presence of the murdered lovers who have risen from their own ashes to avenge their deaths. This film’s pervasive feeling of impending doom is aided by shadowy, low-contrast cinematography and a robust score from Ennio Morricone, and features a riveting performance from Steele, whose large eyes pierce the screen with dangerous beauty. ~ Cavett Binion, Rovi |

Alberta Hunter: My Castle’s Rockin’ - $12.99 Born in 1895, Alberta Hunter first rose to fame as a blues singer in the early ’20s; Louis Armstrong, Eubie Blake, and Sidney Bechet all played on her records, she headlined nightclubs in the United States and Europe, and starred with Paul Robeson in the British production of Showboat in 1928. In 1956, after almost 35 years in show business, Hunter decided to retire from performing, and took a job as a nurse. In 1977, the hospital where she worked, believing her to be 65 years old (they were off by 17 years), gave her mandatory retirement. With little to do, Hunter began performing at a night spot in New York’s Greenwich Village called the Cookery; singing with even greater force and personality than she had in her youth, Hunter’s shows wowed jazz critics, and she went on to record three successful albums for Columbia Records and score the film Remember My Name before she passed on in 1984. Alberta Hunter: My Castle’s Rockin’ is a warm and fascinating portrait of Hunter’s personal and professional lives, featuring plenty of footage of the ageless diva performing for an enthusiastic audience.
