Argus [LP] $22.98 Despite their origins in doom and crossover thrash bands, the members of Pennsylvania’s Argus find creative common ground in the realm of so-called traditional heavy metal, where their eponymous 2009 debut matches up extremely well with contemporary competition like San Francisco’s Slough Feg and Chicago’s Bible of the Devil. Of course, no band can be associated with traditional metal without dabbling in a certain amount of slothful doom, as bequeathed to pathetic earthlings some 40 years earlier by founding fathers Black Sabbath. But it’s telling that Argus’ least memorable offerings here, such as “None Shall Know the Hour” and instrumental “The Effigy Is Real,” happen to be the most deliberate, as though the musicians had already spent most of their best ideas with their prior bands (including Penance and Abdullah). Instead, Argus are at their best when charging into battle mounted upon galloping metal anthems like “Devils, Devils” and “Eternity (Beyond, Pt. 1),” which are as timeless as the decades separating Grand Magus and Iron Maiden. Argus also fares extremely well when combining those slower and faster tempos into a series of extended epics like “Bending Time,” “The Outsider,” and the quite spectacular “The Damnation of John Faustus,” which adds a proggy organ intro and even a bass solo! And the arguable album climax, “From Darkness…Light,” is where the band’s twin harmony guitar parts — already generously sprinkled all over the songs cited above — really take over; forging an iron-clad testimony to the aforementioned Maiden and other hard and prog-rock immortals like Thin Lizzy and Wishbone Ash (whose third and perhaps best-known album gave Argus their name, of course). So it is precisely by tapping into this rich musical legacy to compose new classics of their own that Argus succeed in perpetuating those traditional metal values for the enjoyment of yet another new generation…and surely beyond. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia |

Argus (Japan) (Mlps) (Shm) $74.99 ARGUS: EXPANDED EDITION contains bonus tracks from LIVE IN MEMPHIS, a 1972 promotional EP.Wishbone Ash includes: Ted Turner, Andy Powell (gutiar); Martin Turner (bass); Steve Upton (drums, percussion).Producer: Derek Lawrence.Reissue producers: Andy McKaie, Leon Tsilis.Includes liner notes by Leon Tsilis.Digitally remastered by Erik Kvortek. On its third album, Wishbone Ash doesn’t mess with its formula–as before, this long running British rock institution purveys a mix of blues, folk, and Yes- style riffs mated to endearingly cosmic lyrics. The songs here, however, are considerably more focused and well crafted than on the band’s previous efforts, and the harmony singing is delightful. As always, the band’s basis is the tag team guitars of Andy Powell and Ted Turner. Fans of this duo’s mix of Yardbirds- and Allman Brothers- style harmony licks and dueling solos will find much to admire here, particularly “The King Will Come” and “Time Was,” a folk-ish epic in several contrasting sections. All in all, ARGUS is one of the best guitar albums of the early ’70s. |

Pilgrimage (Japan) (Mlps) (Shm) $54.99 Wishbone Ash’s sophomore release, Pilgrimage, unveiled their creative genius after a debut that merely presented them as a boogie- and blues-based rock outfit. The opening track, “Vas Dis,” with its jazz bassline, slicing rhythm guitar, and gibberish vocals was their answer to “Hocus Pocus” by Focus (or vice versa as both were released in 1971). “Jail Bait” has gone on to become a Wishbone Ash staple as well as possessing one of the more memorable guitar riffs of ’70s rock & roll. A conscientious effort seemed to be in place for this band to write and perform material better suited to their gentler vocal tendencies. Where Wishbone Ash essentially went full tilt throughout, Pilgrimage is a moodier affair that includes beautiful, slower melodies like the brief instrumentals “Alone” and “Lullaby” along with the chilling “Valediction,” which should have been an Ash classic but is rarely featured on live and hits collections. Even though this band toned it down a bit for this album, their impressive guitar playing was heightened due to the variance in their songwriting. Next to Argus this is the Wishbone Ash album to judge all other Ash albums by. ~ Dave Sleger |

Lady Chatterley – Subtitle $24.99 D.H. Lawrence’s once-scandalous tale of a married woman who finds herself through an affair with another man is brought to the screen in this adaptation directed by Pascale Ferran. Constance Chatterley (Marina Hands) is a lovely woman in her mid twenties who is married to Sir Clifford Chatterley (Hippolyte Girardot), a wealthy British nobleman many years her senior who is paralyzed from the waist down due to an injury sustained during World War I. While Constance loves her husband, she has grown weary of her life as a bird in a gilded cage, as well as her husband’s lack of affection. One day, Constance steps out to take a walk and pauses to tell Parkin (Jean-Louis Coulloc’h), the estate’s groundskeeper, that the cook would like him to shoot a pheasant for the evening’s meal. Constance discovers Parkin is only half-dressed, and the physical strength of his body makes a strong impression on her. Parkin senses Constance’s attraction to him, and he’s equally taken by her beauty; in time the two throw caution to the wind and give in to their mutual passion. Constance blooms through her lovemaking with Parkin, and she finds his simple, rustic individualism is more to her taste than the life her husband has given her. But as Constance embraces her love for Parkin, others become aware of their relationship. Lady Chatterley was adapted from Lady Chatterley et l’Homme des Bois, the second of three versions Lawrence would publish of his best-known novel (it was published in English as John Thomas and Lady Jane). ~ Mark Deming, Rovi |
